Publisher's summary

Seattle Investigator J. P. Beaumont is drawn into an intriguing and shockingly personal case in this superb tale of suspense from New York Times best-selling author J. A. Jance.

Former Seattle homicide cop J. P. Beaumont is learning to enjoy the new realities of retirement - doing morning crossword puzzles by a roaring fireplace; playing Frisbee with his new dog; having quiet lunches with his still-working wife. But then his past comes calling.

When a long-ago acquaintance, Alan Dale, shows up on Beau’s doorstep with a newborn infant in hand and asking for help locating his missing daughter, Beau finds himself faced with an investigation that will turn his own life upside down by dragging his none-too-stellar past onto a roller-coaster ride that may well derail his serene present.

It turns out that even in retirement, murder is still the name of J. P. Beaumont’s game.

The narrator ruined the book.

I've read and listened to every one of JAJance's Beaumont and Brady series, some several times over.
This narrator is truly unlistenable for me. I tried him on Proof of Life at fast speed but on this novel even fast speed could not cure his deficits.

He is overly dramatic and stretches out words like "veeeeeerry" to a point where i was fast forwarding . I even tried to listen at 1.50 speed which made his drawn out words okay but others words too fast.

He drops his voice key at the end of some sentences and does this rise and fall sing song narration like some 1890s vaudeville player on other sentences.

His narration may be great for some other book but for a Beaumont character it is immensely distracting for me.
I returned the book without listening to all of it.

Couldn’t Finish

Good storyline but 2 chapters of the narrator was all I could take. Bad experience.

Love the JP Beaumont series

The story was one of her best. My only complaint is the narration. It's extremely irritating to hear place names mispronounced over and over. Yawk a ma? Kit ti toss? Al kee? Too bad the town of Puyallup wasn't in the story. I would have loved to hear the pronunciation of that.

Won’t Listen To Another Book With This Reader

All the characters sounded the same. Beau has aged during the series but Alan Sklar makes him sound 100. Also, Mr. Sklar reads too slowly, it was like slogging through mud. Love the story but not the narrator.

An Easy Read

I have read quite a few of the Beaumont series over the years. Every time I read one, I think I should go back and read them all in order, but other books keep getting in the way. I always enjoy J. A. Jance’s writing and her storytelling skills.

The book is well written. The plot twists and turns. Jance inserts some humor in the story. J. P. Beaumont is now retired from the police force and is working as a licensed private investigator. His wife, Mel, is the Chief of Police of Bellingham. In this book Beau is hired to find a missing girl. She left her new born baby at the hospital and disappeared. Jance seems to have such interesting plots and characters in her books. I enjoyed Lucy, the Irish Wolf Hound. She was a unique character in the story. There was no action in the story, but I was kept engaged through-out. The book is a pleasant change of pace type of book.

The book is thirteen hours and ten minutes. Alan Sklar does a good job narrating the story. Sklar has narrated the last few books in the series.

Horrible Narration

I cannot rate this book because the narrator is too painful to listen to. I learned to listen to a sample before purchasing

Beaumont

It feels like the author is trying to find a way to lay this character 'to rest', like she's bored with the identify-ably human personality she created. Unfortunately, the performer not only underscored that, but did it sounding unenthused himself. this was simply a time filler.

Typically good J A Jance story. Terrible narrator.

Story was interesting and moved right along. The narrator was so bad he had to run speed at 1.25. Rather than a Seattle cop, the narrator sounded like a supercilious elitist professor giving a lecture, thrilled with his own unctuousness.
