Editorial reviews

Editors Select, May 2017

I’m embarrassed to admit to being a newcomer to author Dennis Lehane. His disturbing yet thought-provoking books like Shutter Island and Mystic River are the types of stories that are right up my alley, so I jumped on the opportunity for an early listen of his new novel Since We Fell. At first, it feels like literary fiction, gradually revealing more and more about protagonist Rachel and how she came to be a happily married recluse. (Side-note - Lehane’s character development is some of the best I’ve encountered.) As he brings us to present day, the book morphs into a thriller - we already know Rachel shoots her husband...but why? I’d be remiss not to mention the performance of Julia Whelan. She perfectly evokes Rachel's roller-coaster-like internal monologue, all while maintaining an essence of stoicism. While some may feel the need for a lighthearted listen to offset the darkness of Since We Fell, I promptly downloaded Mystic River and can’t wait to press play. —Laura, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

Since We Fell follows Rachel Childs, a former journalist who, after an on-air mental breakdown, now lives as a virtual shut-in. In all other respects, however, she enjoys an ideal life with an ideal husband. Until a chance encounter on a rainy afternoon causes that ideal life to fray. As does Rachel's marriage. As does Rachel herself. Sucked into a conspiracy thick with deception, violence, and possibly madness, Rachel must find the strength within herself to conquer unimaginable fears and mind-altering truths.

By turns heartbreaking, suspenseful, romantic, and sophisticated, Since We Fell is a novel of profound psychological insight and tension. It is Dennis Lehane at his very best.

Lehane in full mature voice

Well written character study with multiple twists and turns. Dennis has great empathy for the female protagonist Rachel. Julia Whelan’s read is an award worthy performance.

Go for it! Great book.

No spoilers

Slow start, the beginning was a bit ‘so what’ for me, but stick with it— Lehane delivers as always!

Truly worth a listen

Great character study wrapped up in a Lehane mystery. The narrator captures the author's unique voice yet this is always a woman's story. If I had read it, I would have missed this stellar performance elevating the novel to memorable literature.

Mr Lehane???

Thank goodness this was on sale for $6 and Ms Julia narrates. She really can deliver and it saved this book. I am not a true fan of this author but l do have 5 of author’s books read by the great Jonathan Davis and Scott Brick, and now ms Julia. If this author wrote this book all the way through, l would be hard pressed to believe it. That’s why the other reviewer’s kept saying how it was difficult to get into and slow in the beginning. It’s almost like, pardon my bias, Romance writer. I own hundreds of romance genre from the 80s and 90s so I recognize the format and the dialogue. Unless Mr. Lehane suddenly decided to explore his gentler side? The other books I have from Mr. Lehane are pretty dark which is why I didn’t buy any more. But since Miss Julia read this one I decided to give it a chance. Who could go wrong for six dollars. The actual story I thought was clever but the long descriptions that the other reviewers said were tedious, were just that, tedious and not engaging.
I’m pretty sure that Mr. Lehane will not make this same mistake twice.
Were my comments of help?

Suspenseful but not believable

Would you consider the audio edition of Since We Fell to be better than the print version?

Did not read the print version

Would you recommend Since We Fell to your friends? Why or why not?

I would recommend it as a well written and fun with a convoluted and implausible storyline. And especially fun for those who know and love Boston!

Which scene was your favorite?

The end.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Any additional comments?

I like Denis Lehane. This was not his best effort. I especially enjoyed the local flavor of this book and others he has written.

What a performance!

1st off I have to mention the performance of Miss Whelan! Incredible! She was perfect. The same energy in the final chapter that she brought to the story in the early ones. What a story this was. Very convoluted, but Lehane is the very best at making sure you’re up to speed throughout. Always times right into everything as it’s happening. Just a fabulous ride! It was a bit slow to start, but it wasn’t hard to stick around knowing the treat you’ll surely be in for. I couldn’t stop listening. Locked in! If you’re a Lehane fan just forget about the credit and hop aboard. This could be his best...no kiddin.

Outstanding work

I could NOT stop listening to this story. So many twists and turns, with clever and witty characters. I was allowed inside their minds in such a way that made me love them all. And kept me guessing until the last few sentences

Pleasantly surprised

I had no idea what this book was going to be about. Bought based on author. LOVED it!! The twists and turns were realistically surprising. I found myself holding my breath at times. Did not want story to end. Also liked the narrator.
