Publisher's Summary

From the USA Today best-selling author of The Silent House comes the perfect gripping mystery for fans of The Silent Patient

What happened while they were sleeping?

A school for the deaf takes an overnight trip to the snowy woods. Five teenagers go to sleep, but only four wake up. Leon is missing, and a teacher’s body is found in the forest....

Sign language interpreter Paige Northwood is brought in to help with interrogations. Everyone at the school has a motive for murder – but they all have an alibi.

As Paige becomes increasingly involved, she suspects there’s something sinister going on. With the clock ticking to find Leon, only one thing is certain: the killer is among them, and ready to strike again....

Critic Reviews

"Sinister, layered, atmospheric.... I couldn’t turn the pages quickly enough." (Debbie Howells)

"A nail-biting page-turner of a thriller.... The sense of a community isolated, and all the conflicts and tensions that brings, adds satisfying layers of complexity." (James Oswald)

"Delicate, brutal, impossible to put down. The Silent House is a disquieting thriller." (Ross Armstrong)

Hard to understand

While I think the idea of having a deaf narrator is creative, it REALLY hard to understand. Had to borrow my friend’s book and read every other chapter. Besides that, great book, and very well written.

HOH people will need to select the written version

I am SSD, single sided deaf since a child, so I do understand the fears & frustrations of being partial deaf. I could not understand the words spoken by the deaf person reading the story & had to skip all those chapters. I understand why these chapters were included to give purpose to the deaf being able to work & participate in the book. It’s important for deaf people to participate in work & feel empowered.
However, If I had known I would have trouble, I would have selected a written copy of the book. It’s a good story. More deaf situations could have been included in the story to illustrate their struggles & successes.
I was frustrated that I had to skip those chapters.

Buyers BEWARE!

I listened to the preview and it sounded good. I thought they were NOT using the hard of hearing narrator again...THEY DID!! I can’t understand her AGAIN. I’m done with these books, they’re frustrating when I’m trying to listen and can’t understand what is being said. Sorry.
