Harney County, Oregon, 1968: Nick Drake has a chest full of medals and enough demons to fill a duffel bag. He's been trained to kill but was never retrained to rejoin society. Drake flees to the lonesome high desert in search of redemption and takes a job patrolling wildlife refuges where the only conflicts are keeping out stray cows and ticketing poachers. But then he stumbles across a girl's body ritually placed in a gully. Her murder is only the beginning, and Drake must face humanity's heart of darkness once again if he's to stop a killer from turning even more gullies into graves.

Story
Secrets and lies can’t stay buried forever in Cedar Valley. In the summer, hikers and campers pack the small Colorado town’s meadows and fields. And in the winter, skiers and snowboarders take over the mountains. Season by season, year after year, time passes, and the lies, like the aspens and evergreens that surround the town, take root and spread deep. Now, someone has uncovered the lies, and it is his murder that continues a chain of events that began almost 40 years ago.

It's the Christmas season and veterinarian Kate Turner is not feeling very jolly. She's overworked, unappreciated, and dealing with two dissatisfied clients. Throw in a very complicated personal life and Kate's definitely got a case of the holiday blues. To make matters worse, Kate's ex-boyfriend, Jeremy, is mugged and robbed after they have a heated argument in the hospital parking lot. Then, two of her dissatisfied clients turn up dead (which really gets Kate's tinsel in a tangle). All of these events seem like coincidences, but they add up to something much more venomous.

4/5 Stars: Silence in West Fork
Summary:
Shepherd’s daughter, who goes by Thorn, is the prime suspect in her boss’s murder. It’s up to Peg to keep the troubled teen safe and find the real killer before the shady detective in charge pins the murder on her out of convenience.
Additional Comments:
- You could experience these books in any order, but they are a tad more satisfying together.
- The performance is decent. You can tell males from females, though not everybody has a distinct voice. Be aware of that if it’s important to you.
- The cast is mostly same as the other Pegasus Quincy books. This being the 5th book, you don’t learn many new tidbits about the leading lady, but the lovable dog, Reckless, has slightly more page time.
- These are relatively clean mysteries. You may find a curse word here and there, but nothing that would make me give a particular warning about. Same for violence. There’s very close to none, which is a tad strange in a mystery/suspense book. Still, it works with the whole small-town vibe.
- The twists and turns in the plot aren’t Earth-shaking, but they keep things lively. They also give a sense of realism to the books. Sometimes, life throws curveballs and elk.
- Thorn’s kind of a brat, but she didn’t annoy me as much as the side characters in the 4th book in this series. Ben kinda annoyed me this round, but I think he’s designed that way. It’s part of his charm.
Conclusion:
Peg Quincy won’t ever go down as the world’s smartest, fastest, or hottest detective. Still, she’s honest-ish, hard-working, and a good lady to have on your side in a pinch. Check out all her earlier adventures too.

Intriguing Story
Shepherd ‘s daughter Thorn is accused of murder, pulling out the knife when she spotted the body. A woman who worked in her Dad’s office, who knew they would be hiking. Taking Thorn into custody she slipped off into the reservation. Then add one detective who lied to get the job, wants a quick closure, to make himself look good. The settings, make one feel you are there. Her stories are always intriguing, and with twists to keep you guessing.

Excellent!
murder-investigation, law-enforcement, arizona, family-dynamics, friendship
Pegasus Quincy is a Sheriff's Department Family Liaison Officer since budget cuts eliminated her deputy position. She gets stuck transporting her retired former partner's angst ridden teenage daughter to where the girl is to meet up with her boss. But the boss has been murdered, the Homicide cop who responds is newly from Florida and has a big chip on his shoulder that really mucks things up as badly as the girl does. Add in the victim's issues with various employees at the company and things really get dicey. Lots of other background going on as well, but explanations are good so that the reader never feels lost even if this the first book read in series. Really good!
Amy Otteson (Narrator) does a fine job.

A Great Listen!
Captivating in an unusual way...a grumpy transplanted Sheriff with a past of some kind, a Sheriff Liaison (aka Family Counselor), a sassy, kinda bratty Goth Girl with an attitude, a dead body and loads of suspects, but police focussing only on one...Sassy and Bratty and Contrarian. Can our heroine and friend of the Brat's father redirect the focus to the real culprit? Good read, well narrated. Enjoyed it.

Exciting mystery and great characters
This is another very good, suspenseful mystery, but as with the previous books in this series, it's the great characters that really make this story special. There is a little scrambling of chronology, but it's clearly delineated by chapter and perspective, so it all makes sense. It's not always realistic, but it's easy to become enraptured by the story and accept the departures from reality.
Amy Otteson has become the voice of Pegasus Quincy, and she does make an effort to give distinctive voices to other characters, but her repertoire of voices is rather limited. Other than that, her performance is quite satisfactory.

Great Mystery
Lakota Grace is a new author to me. The Pegasus Quincy series consists of 5 books and I started with the last in the series :-) This was not a problem as the story works well as a stand-alone book. I enjoyed the storyline and the characters very much. The audiobook was narrated by Amy Otteson and she does a wonderful job. In fact, I found her voice perfect for the story. I have the other 4 books in my library and will be listening to them as well. Great mystery with many twists and turns.
I was gifted this book with the understanding that I would leave an honest review.

Thorny Situation
Silence in West Fork
(Pegasus Quincy Mysteries #5)
by Lakota Grace
Pegasus Quincy is back in this fifth installment of this series. She and former partner Shep Malone are in an awkward position when his daughter is accused of murder.
There is plenty of action, suspense, with personal relationships that can be a bit confusing. This kept me hanging on to the finish. I hope there will be more books in
this series!!!
The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Amy Otteson gave an excellent performance.
