Publisher's summary

In Five-Twelfths of Heaven, Silence Leigh discovered that she was not only unusual as a female pilot. She was also an impossible thing: a female magus. Her unique abilities make her the only person capable of reaching Earth, humanity's original home, now sealed behind a mysterious barrier. But first she must learn to use her newfound talents.

As the Hegemon's men close in on her, her husbands, and her teacher, she must make a dangerous bargain: undertake an impossible rescue mission in exchange for a vital map. If she succeeds, she may be able to save Earth. If she fails...

Musical Magic for Space Travel

I received a copy of this audio book for free. It's the story about a woman and her team trying to overthrow an evil government, and also find Earth. The protagonist, Silence, is very competent which is refreshing for me. She has some self doubt occasionally, but everyone has that. She is both a pilot, and a magus, which seems to be someone who can control musical harmonies to, for a lack of a better expression, to do magic. This includes being able to navigate through space and change characteristics of items. Homunculi are in many scenes, which are monkey like creatures that are grown with magic to perform simple tasks. Silence lives in a society that looks down on women. This results in Silence having to dress as a boy several times. Overall I enjoyed it and would like to learn more about the characters and the universe.
