Publisher's summary

Siddhartha is a novel that deals with the spiritual journey of self-discovery of a man named Siddhartha during the time of the Gautama Buddha. Siddhartha decides to leave behind his home in the hope of gaining spiritual illumination by becoming an ascetic wandering beggar of the Shramanas. Joined by his best friend, Govinda, Siddhartha fasts, becomes homeless, renounces all personal possessions, and intensely meditates, eventually seeking and personally speaking with Gautama, the famous Buddha, or Enlightened One.

Afterward, both Siddhartha and Govinda acknowledge the elegance of the Buddha's teachings. Although Govinda hastily joins the Buddha's order, Siddhartha does not follow, claiming that the Buddha's philosophy, though supremely wise, does not account for the necessarily distinct experiences of each person. He argues that the individual seeks an absolutely unique, personal meaning that cannot be presented to him by a teacher. He thus resolves to carry on his quest alone...

A Classic for a reason.

It is easy to debate the translation of this work but the essence of the story can have a profound affect on every soul
searching for a deeper meaning to their existence.

Many tools are needed to reach Enlightenment and this work is one of the methods to get you there.

You are aided in this journey by a good performance by the Narrator.

Elegant and easy to understand delivery

Siddhartha is an intellectual, spiritual book that tells the tale of Siddharth'as journey through poverty, sacrifice, friendship and achievement as he pursues enlightenment. It is lyrical and poetic, which makes this narration both compelling and pure pleasure to enjoy.

The narrator, Christopher Preece, delivers a smooth, polished, easily understood performance. His vocal achievement brings color to the author's prose so even those unfamiliar with the story will enjoy the literature.

This is an excellent accompaniment to the print version of the book. I believe some readers would more easily be able to understand the novel if they listened while reading because the narrator interprets the text through his verbal delivery and inflection.

Great presention of a classic tale

Herman Hesse's classic novel of a wealthy Indian Brahmin who casts off a life of privilege to seek spiritual fulfillment via a combination of philosophies based in Eastern religions and Western individualism in his search for meaning in his life. Although I don't subscribe to the particular paths Siddhartha chose to follow in journey, the quest is one most all set out on at some point in their life. The superb narration by Christopher Preece makes the listen both enjoyable and a bit easier to follow than the actual reading of the book may; depending on the translation.

Anyway, this is a classic that should be read or listened to by all and I would recommend this edition without any hesitation. Easier to understand this classic w/audible!

Siddhartha
By: Hermann Hesse
Narrated by: Christopher Preece
This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary.
This is the first time I actually understand this book. I have read this book before a few times but it is a difficult book to read. For me, it is hard to stay focused and follow what is going on at times. With this audible book, with this narrator, I finally got the flow of the book! That's a big plus. Once I understood the basics of what was going on, I understood more. Do I understand all? No, but I get it a lot more.
The narrator was wonderful with a clear, soothing voice that was perfect!
