A Pleasant Surprise!

For a short story, it was much better than I thought it would be. The author did a good job describing the "war zone", it was descriptive and interesting. It really made me wish this was longer. Captain Tyler Alexander and his team were ambushed, while taking Junie and the other Peace Corps members to an orphanage in Afghanistan. Junie and the Captain were taken prisoner and he planed a daring escape for them.

The narration was good. I actually liked Michael Icenogle performance more than Rita Rush but they both did good.

This story could easily be listened to in one sitting. There's no steamy romance, but the story follows the characters as they come to terms with their feelings after their ordeal. I received this audio from the publisher for an honest review.

Amazing story!

--I was given a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review

This is my first Amy Rachiele book, and it was amazing. I didn't know what to expect, have listened to many military romances, but this was really the first one that has taken me to the front lines and made me feel like I was there. The story of Junie and Tyler is a short, but very powerful one.Tyler, Captain of his unit, and Junie, a Peace Corp volunteer are kidnapped by the Taliban early on. Once away, Tyler removes himself as far as he can from Junie, unable to stop thinking about her. Tyler, though an idiot for part of the story, comes through as an amazing, caring man. Just when Junie thought all was lost, he comes in and apologizes, sweeps her off her feet and they are on the road to love. Then, the attack happens and the hero comes through. I love that the hard muscled, strong, brave man saves a piece of shrapnel that he took from Junie, a true romantic keeping something that hooks them to each other and carries it around.

Rita Rush and Michael Icenogle bring this story to life with their tagteam narration. I especially loved Michael, I thought his voice was perfect for this story.

Sweet!

Any additional comments?

This audiobook was given to me for an honest unbiased review. This was sweet, loved the reaction from both the military and civilian perspectives. There is no sex, this was a nice change, there is no need for sex in romances, it can be great, but too much leaves a vacuum in the plot, this was wonderful, no vacuum.

Interesting and Insightful

The author and narrators were new to me on this book along with the military romance genre. I thought the author did a great job portraying both the military and civilization reaction to their surroundings. The story was well written and full of hope. Language was not offensive at all. Steam level was low and clean. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Lovely Clean Romance

This Military romance is set in Afghanistan. It's a story full of action and adventure and a blossoming love. This is a short sweet romance with a happy ending.
I love hot and heavy books. But sometimes those books get boring. With the action and adventure, this one is anything but boring. There is no sex in this book but it really doesn't need it. The story is a good one. If you love adventure a little romance and a happy ending this quick listen is for you.

Hero Saves Woman-Ignore the Unbelievable and Enjoy

June is on her way to work in an orphanage in Afghanistan to work. Captain Tyler is the head of a group of soldiers whose current task is to bring the volunteers to the orphanage.

Along the way their vehicle was hit and both June & Tyler are captured by the Taliban.

What follows is a string of rather unbelievable circumstances and numerous coincidences that keep the story going with plenty of action.

Since *I was given a copy of this book to listen to in exchange from my review, I set aside the above (sort of unrealistic) issues and allowed myself to listen to a great story.

Rita Rush & Michael Icenogle were both good. I did think that Rush's female characters sounded quite similar but the performance over all of the male characters were very unique.

Notes: Violence, strong language & the threat of a rape is alluded to.

Ratings: Rated R for the reasons above in my notes.

Stars: Overall 4, Performance 3.5, story 3.5

Gets you right from the beginning

What made the experience of listening to Shrapnel's Kiss the most enjoyable?

I like dual narrator format and this book was doing perfectly. The combination of Rita Rush and Michael Icenogle made this story come alive.

What about Rita Rush and Michael Icenogle ’s performance did you like?

This story was written in 2 person point of view. Some parts were Junie's side of the story and others were Tyler's. Having both a female and male narrator made it even more 'personal'. You really felt like Junie and Tyler were telling their stories.

Any additional comments?

Ms. Rachiele has written an well thought out book about love in the midst of war. She makes you totally believe everything written and I can't wait to listen to more of her work.

What a shock!

Would you listen to Shrapnel's Kiss again? Why?

Yes, will certainly be keeping this book in my audio library. I was shocked to find this story so captivating. Meeting Junie on her journey to Afghanistan with the Peace Corps was at first slow but took off like a shot shortly after she arrives and meets Captain Tyler Alexander. The misconceptions towards each other were quickly dispelled and the respect of the military by the author along the voyage made this an enjoyable read.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the reality of war brought into the story. The unlikelihood of beauty in such an unlikely place is what makes the storyline one of the best I've listened to in a long time.

Have you listened to any of Rita Rush and Michael Icenogle ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No, I haven't but after this I will definitely be seeking these narrators out.

A short, emotion filled

The story is short but interesting and well narrated. Just the right amount of crisp and neat detail to create the setting, keep the narrative moving quickly forward and cover all the expectations of a military romance. And like a gift, the loose ends are neatly tied together in a pretty bow at the end.
