Son against father for rangeland justice.

What son could draw against his own father? That's the question Neil Wallace had to ask himself.

Neil admired his father, King Wallace, for building up the biggest ranch in the territory and defending it with guns blazing against rustlers and robbers. But Neil knew the days of the wild west and the taking of law into one's own hands were gone. Yet he was positive his father wouldn't be restrained by any scruples.

Now his father was planning to dam the river that supplied water to all the valley ranches and charge them rates that would keep every man-jack in debt to him forever. Neil was determined to stop King even if it took bullets to do it. But first he had to tell his father why a son might have to turn against his own blood:

"It's because you're trying to do something no man has a right to do. You're trying to make slaves out of free men...and you're not going to get away with it. Your scheme is going to blow sky high - and you along with it!"

And with those words, range war exploded in all its bloody fury, setting off a dynamite relay of greed, revenge, and gunpowder temper that threatened to destroy Neil and the ranchers he defended.

Solid writing and good performance. Not to much to write here. I liked the characters and Neil’s struggle was a realistic one. I liked it. I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

In the vast expanse of audiobooks, where every tale competes for attention, "Shootout at Warbird" by Edwin Booth, brought to life by the skillful narration of Jack de Golia, stands tall as a riveting testament to the allure of the Old West. From the very first moment, when de Golia's voice graces your ears, you're transported to a time when courage, conflict, and the clash of ideals reigned supreme.

Narration, they say, can make or break an audiobook, and Jack de Golia's performance is nothing short of remarkable. His voice, seasoned like aged whiskey, carries the essence of the Old West like a melody of nostalgia. Just as a ten-gallon hat suits a cowpoke, de Golia's voice befits the rugged landscape of the wild frontier. With a touch of gravel and a hint of determination, he masterfully navigates the twists and turns of Booth's tale, seamlessly weaving the characters' emotions and struggles into a rich auditory tapestry.

The heart of the story beats with the conflict between a father's legacy and a son's determination for justice. Neil Wallace, our protagonist, returns home after eight years of separation, only to find himself at odds with his own father, King Wallace. While Neil reveres the principles of justice and freedom, his father personifies the unchecked power and avarice of the era. This father-son clash, fueled by conflicting values, forms the crucible in which the story's brilliance is forged.

The backdrop of the story is painted with hues of the Old West, set against the rugged landscapes of Colorado or Wyoming, where cattle barons ruled and range wars were as common as the sun rising. Neil, a man of integrity and empathy, embodies the antithesis of his father's character. As King Wallace aims to subjugate neighboring ranchers, Neil's sense of right and wrong propels him into the center of a brewing storm—a range war that threatens to engulf the territory in bloodshed.

Booth's narrative prowess shines through in every line, encapsulating the tension between familial loyalty and the pursuit of justice. Neil's internal struggle is palpable as he grapples with the desire to respect his father's legacy while standing up against his ruthless tactics. The emotional depth Booth infuses into the characters elevates the audiobook beyond a mere tale of conflict, transforming it into a symphony of human dilemmas.

"Shootout at Warbird" isn't just about bullets flying and showdowns at high noon. It's a tale of introspection, growth, and the complexity of relationships. Neil's journey represents the eternal struggle between doing what is right and reconciling it with familial bonds. As Neil faces the brewing range war, his internal battle mirrors the external conflict, making the narrative not just action-packed but emotionally charged.

The audiobook's runtime may be relatively short at just three hours, but within this compact duration, Booth manages to create a world that feels lived-in, authentic, and immersive. The pacing is finely tuned, never rushing but allowing the tension to simmer and build organically. It's a testament to Booth's storytelling acumen that even in this concise format, the characters are well-fleshed, the conflicts impactful, and the resolution satisfying.

In the capable hands—or rather, voice—of Jack de Golia, the characters spring to life, each with their unique cadence and personality. De Golia's narration adds a layer of authenticity, making the Old West setting feel all the more real. His ability to infuse the characters' voices with emotion and distinction is nothing short of remarkable.

In conclusion, "Shootout at Warbird" is a stellar audiobook that rides the waves of conflict, honor, and integrity in the Old West. Edwin Booth's masterful storytelling, coupled with Jack de Golia's impeccable narration, creates an auditory experience that's not to be missed. With its gripping plot, morally rich characters, and the clash of generations, this audiobook is a harmonious blend of traditional Western elements and timeless human dilemmas. So, saddle up and embark on a journey through a world where bullets and ideals collide, leaving you on the edge of your seat until the very last word.
