Publisher's summary

LA gets a little hotter when there's blood on the streets....

This special edition of Shifter Legacies combines books one and two, and contains a long journey of dark paranormal urban fantasy.

Way of the Wolf: Dr. David Lephmann lived a normal existence until he was attacked by a shifter. Thrust into a world of violence and mistrust, he must battle for a place among his new people.

Only strange new alliances can keep him alive. A powerful master vampire may help him take his revenge on the shifter who destroyed his life. There's only one distraction from his mission: an intriguing shifter woman who opens up his world to werewolf romance.

With no way back to his old life, David has no choice but to bend to the rules of his new people. Can he survive the challenge?

Wolf's Revenge: Los Angeles - a city of vampires and shifters where violence simmers just below the surface. LAPD Lieutenant Christine Humber has worked for years in the city's most violent district, nicknamed Monster Central. When Chris examines the murder scene of a werewolf, a particularly hard-to-kill shifter, she doesn't find a shred of evidence. A serial killer was just what the city needed to make tensions start to bubble over.

Threatened by the chance of a new urban revolt, the FBI steps in and tries to take the case. Chris reluctantly teams with the overly slim and beautiful Agent Flint to maintain the fragile peace. As the shifter body count grows, Chris and Flint must find answers before war and death spill out onto the streets.

If you like shifters or the work of Charlaine Harris and Jim Butcher, you'll love these tantalizingly action-packed books.

Great Story!

I really enjoyed book. My only complaint about the story was that I found it hard to believe that a detective in this world would not have bothered learning how the monsters lived because that knowledge would have helped in investigations. I also found it hard to belt that she wouldn't have realized that getting bitten would have cost her her job. That said, my suggestion is to suspend your disbelief and enjoy the story.

Modern Day Tolkien Like World

The novels take place in near future Tolkien like universe. It is a world of not just humans but also of shifters, elves, vampires, dwarfs, dragons, witches and other magical paranormal creatures. It is a world of magic and technology. The humans are the dominant species and many humans detest and fear the magical beings. The magical beings face great bigotry and prejudices.

Vampires are considered as non beings and have no rights. They can not own property, and have no legal rights and if some one kills them it is not considered a crime.

Shifters are second class citizens. They can not get loans or be part of guild and have a difficult time getting jobs. They are seen as plague carriers.

When David a doctor is bitten and infected by a shifter he loses his doctors license because shifters are not allowed to be docters. When Chris is bitten and infected by a shifter she loses her badge because shifters can not be police officers.

In this fantasy it really gives the reader a good idea of how life would of been like in the segregated south, or apartheid South Africa or for Jews in Europe during the 30's and 40's.

The first novel is very complex and confusing to start with. There is what seems to be multiple unrelated story lines that jump from one story mid-way to another. I thought at first that there were parts missing or that maybe the book skipped mid-way to the second book. Do stick with the book as these multiple story lines will begin to converge and make sense culminating in a grand climax.

The second novel is less complex and more direct and easy to follow. Chris who was a very opinionated tough detective with an attitude and chip on her shoulder slowly evolves into a more open minded well rounded mature person.

The performance and narration was excellent. All in all it was a fun suspenseful fantasy adventure with a strong social statement.

A slow start but worth sticking with.

It took a little for me to get fully into the book as there was a lot of setup and plot lines happening in the beginning . Now I’ve recently read a book that had a lot of plot lines that came together beautifully in the end, so I decided to give this one a chance in case it turned into a gem like that one did…I’m still not sure how I feel about it. The story lines intersected often enough, but I feel like the description for the first book is a bit misleading in that while David figures heavily in the first book the books are less about specifically him and more about the world as seen through various characters including him. The second one did focus on Chris more than the first one focused on David though, so that improved. I did enjoy the books and will likely look for following ones.

As for the world, there is ample description to give you a full picture of the world and it’s easy to get immersed in the story because of this. I definitely want to know more about the various characters. I want to know more about how the others who get changed in the story continue adjusting to their new world and how the existing paranormal characters continue to exist. I also appreciated that the story felt realistic…as though this could be a world that exists right now. Especially the uneasy human/paranormal coexistence.

The narrator was good. Different voices and some accents make it easy to follow along with the action. The voices chosen for the characters fit what I thought they should sound like. I am always weary of a male narrator in a female POV book and vice versa as happens in the second book. However perhaps because I listened to the two books consecutively it did not bother me as much. I recommend the audio version in books this long as it does help bring the story to life.

Complex story

I received this book at no charge from the author in exchange for an unbiased review via AudiobookBlast dot com. Loved the book, they did not disappoint. Had previously listened to the Mekaiaaria War series and was pleased to find the same good quality of storytelling. Moving on to try more of Mark's writing and hope for more book combos.

Great listen

l enjoyed both books. The narrator did an execellent job. However, book 1 was my favorite. l had a hard time in the beginning with the different story lines but once I've over came that, the book really caught my attention and held it. My favorite character's stories were David, Stephen and Gavin. Book 2, was okay, however, the main character Chris was annoying. I find that she went from being a strong detective/lieutenant woman, to a whining, annoying pain. I had to take breaks between listening, because I just could not take her for long periods. I would have love to know what happened with Gavin and Angel. Overall, I rate this set 4 stars.

Next Book

Who was your favorite character and why?

David/Mist was easily my favorite, his time in "changing" was done very well. One complaint was trying to follow characters that had little interaction but were referenced at various times during the narration.
