Publisher's Summary

Government assassin Andrea McNeilly's job normally requires keeping her mouth shut and not asking questions. Not anymore. Despite her sass and unique skills as a Shifter, she's out of luck.

After a botched hit on a Vampire's human servant, Andy's on the run. Right in her way is an over-sized Werewolf Alpha with the attitude of a brute and allure of a Norse god. An assassin requires a heart of stone, but the passion provoked by Wick puts a chink in Andy's emotional armor.

Andy's desire to trust Wick is blocked by her painful past and Wick's allegiance to the very Vampire who now owns her future. Can Andy reconcile her yearnings for Wick and discover the truth behind the kill order? Or has destiny already selected her for a horrific fate?

Such a Fun book!

What a fun exciting book! I really enjoyed the twist to the paranormal world! These characters were tough, funny and sexy. Wick was my favorite, I love a strong silent type...aka sexy alpha! The writing was good and even though it had a cliffhanger, it wasn't a bad one at all!

The narration was fantastic! I seriously love Laurel Schroeder's work! I really hope she narrates book 2!

If you enjoy Werewolves, Vamps and more, you'll like this book!

I think this was a good start to a new series

I think this was a good start to a new PNR/UF series; I liked the secret agent taking out the supernatural aspect. I enjoyed the read somewhat – I didn’t hate it but didn’t love it either. I was actually really excited when I started this book. It immediately pulls you in, with the assassination and attempted escape. The mystery that is Andi and the and her trying to figure out what she really is, what it means all the while trying to find the person who set her up for the latest botched job. Then it started to read like every other PNR/UF out there and I started to get bored with it. I had hope that the romance happening between Andi and Wick would help move things along but no….just a lot of build up, and sexual tension with no pay off at the end. While not quite a cliff hanger ending…..not everything is wrapped up (duh, otherwise you would not have a series) however I don’t really have a desire to move on to the next book. While I listened to the first half of it pretty quick it took me 11 days to get through the last 4 hours

Laurel Schroeder is a new to me narrator and she did an awesome job with the characters and the voices she gave them. I do look foreword to listening to more from her

Over all the writing and characterization were good. The narration was good, the actual story I’m still uncertain how I feel about it….it started out strong and then just kind of lost its momentum.

Action and more action

this is my first book by J C Mckenzie. Buy won't be my last. This book had action from the start till the end. Andie is a shifter but different from most. She has three forms. She is an assassin and her last mission did not end like others. The target was human. Her targets are supernaturals. However, this job got her involved with a master vampire and pack of werewolves and were cats. If that was not enough she finds out she was wanted for the past two years by the organization she worked for because they thought she had gone rogue. She did not know her handler was rogue. The human victim belongs to the master vampire. After she is captured by the werewolves that are tied to the master vampire, she has to go before him and answer his questions and then has to find out why his human was targeted or she will become the humans play thing. He is not very nice. He did not even die when she tore is his throat out in her mountain lion form. why? She out the alpha werewolf,
Wick, is her wolf's mate. She has a problem belonging to anyone because of her past. During her search for the one her issued the hit, she find her handler dead and calls in the organization she works for and finds out she is wanted. She then has to prove she did not go rogue. What else can happen? This audio book was good. I recommend this series. i can't wait to begin the next book. This reminds a little Chloe Neill and Patricia Briggs books. I received this audio book free in exchange for an honest review. I do not regret reading this book.

What a surprise this was in the best ways..

Where to start. A lone shifter with special abilities fights for her freedom. She's fierce with her combat abilities and many other abilities too.. this book had it all suspends, violence, love, and betrayal But.. I was truly disappointed it ends in a cliffhanger. I can't wait for the second book to come out. I truly hope there is a second book. The narrator was pot on with all the voices. Urban fantasy, fresh and fun

Shift Happens is an Urban fantasy that is just different enough to be fresh. There are typical features of the genre, such as 1st person narration and a kick butt heroine. One of the things that makes this story different is the way the author plays with conventions in the world. For example, shifters and weres are different types of supernatural creatures. The story is set in the present, but there is also the feeling of recent history as the supernaturals came out after a Purge. It was fun hearing the slang that came out because of the change in society.

One of the other things I liked about the story is that it is set in Vancouver. If you're a scifi/fantasy fan like me, you'll know it as the place where genre tv and movies are filmed. It was nice to have it as the real location of the action.

Andy is like a lot of heroines in that she's tough with a hard past. She knows her own mind, but she doesn't fall into the "too stupid to live" trap that can happen even with competent heroines. She is a shifter who can take multiple animal shapes, and that makes her the rare Carus of the series. She is interesting enough that I am tempted to continue the adventures with her.

I listened to this story as an audiobook, and the narrator's performance is quite good. It was a voice I felt I could trust with this person's story, and that's a big investment of time when you spend about 8 hours of listening. I admit, I didn't care for her voice of Wick. During emotional parts, the male voices all started to sound similar to his: gruff and scratchy. Otherwise, the male voices of the secondary characters were fine, and she does well with accents. As the voice of Andy, though, the narrator does a good job in making her someone witty with whom we want to share the story's journey.

While this is an independent title, none of the work here is cut rate. Both the writing and the narration are well done. you don't have to worry about the odd awkward turns of phrase that weren't edited out or occasionally strange problems with the audio levelling. Rest easy that this all is professionally done.

Shifters and Weres

What did you love best about Shift Happens?

Being a paranormal romance book lover, I knew I would at least like this book. A good story line and narrator is essential. This book had both in spades. I loved that it had both shifter and were as the hero and heroine.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Andy, of course! I tend to love paranormal alphas more than the female roles but she was just so unique. Being as she has 3 animals inside her, she is beloved and cherished by many, even the unsavorables. She was courageous and was more than one dimensional.

Which character – as performed by Laurel Schroeder – was your favorite?

Being as the narrator is female I would think Andy. I loved her voice and she also did a great job on the male voices also. I would listen to any audio book from her.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No. That is nothing against the book for I generally do not laugh and never cry over a book. I think this book was not a comedy nor a tragic drama, it was just the way I like them, fast paced and intriguing.

The Title Says It All

I was given this book in exchange for an unbiased review via audiobook boom. The h is such an awesome shifter that she not only changes into one form, not two, not even three she changes into four and the fourth one is awesome. She rescues the females of her first pact from forced mating then becomes a government assassin. She trusts her handler so much that he has taken them off the grid for over two years before she encounters the pack that has her true mate as it's alpha. The plot thickens. The whole pack is controlled by a vampire. How do they get out from under his thumb? Read the book. It is worth the credit. The narrator helped make the unbelievable believable.

Not a helpless damsel in distress

I've read several shift romances, but admittedly shifting into 3 animals is new for me. I was a little concerned the plot would try too much in a single story, but gladly the author made it work. There was a lot of action and the story was fast paced. I didn't care much for the alpha. I felt he was a bit of a reused character in shifter stories, but he wasn't too shallow.

I enjoyed the narration. The narrator doesn't have a high pitched voice, so her male voices are better than a lot of girls can do.
