What happens when free speech isn’t cancelled by governments, but by hashtags, algorithms, and tutting strangers on Twitter?

Shhh! You’re Offended: The Death (and Afterlife) of Free Speech is a brilliantly funny and biting satire of outrage culture, cancel mobs, and the absurd lengths we now go to just to avoid offending anyone.

British satirist Arthur Rantwell takes listeners on a laugh-out-loud journey through the minefield of modern conversation, where every opinion is a potential scandal and every apology is a performance worthy of the West End.

Inside you’ll discover:

  • Why social media outrage is Britain’s true national sport.
  • How cancel culture follows a strict three-act play: Accusation, Apology, Redemption Tour.
  • The rise of safe spaces, therapy otters, and beanbags as tools of survival.
  • Why algorithms ban trifle photos but allow conspiracy theories.
  • The absurd hacks people invent to avoid cancellation — parrots, emojis, and interpretive dance included.
  • A glimpse into the future, where Parliament communicates entirely in jazz hands and comedians win BAFTAs for saying absolutely nothing.

Packed with parody case studies, tongue-in-cheek “survival tips,” and enough British wit to power the National Grid, this book is both a satire and a survival guide for anyone bewildered by the modern rules of speech.

Warning: May cause laughter, eye-rolling, or spontaneous tutting. Proceed at your own risk.

I really enjoyed this book. It was funny, so funny that you laugh out loud, and when you try to relate it to someone, you’re like, "Yeah, I guess you had to be there." You definitely just have to listen.

There are events that happen that are provided to share contrast with some of the silliness and jokes made. Perhaps some of the favorite parts to listen to are at the end, with discussions about the future of free speech, life after death, and the revival of free speech. There are even suggestions for getting by in a society with the new culturally accepted free speech norms.

All around, this book is funny, makes you think, and encourages reflection on how you carry yourself, perceive, and judge others, and what you may or may not take personally. I wouldn't say it minimizes the value and utility in words and language in terms of choosing words to mean what you intend. Either way, I enjoyed this and appreciate the humor and encouragement to set up a world of speech that aligns most closely with our goals and outcomes. Thank you!

Rantwell doesn’t hold back, and that’s exactly what makes this book so compelling. He taps into the tension around free speech with a sharp voice and just enough humor to keep it from feeling preachy. Whether you agree with all his takes or not, he forces you to actually think which feels rare these days. It’s the kind of book that’s probably going to piss some people off, but honestly, that’s kind of the point.

This audiobook is short, clever, and packed with biting humor. Arthur Rantwell takes a heavy subject and turns it into something both entertaining and thought provoking. The satire is sharp, the examples are ridiculous in the best way, and the British wit keeps it light even when he’s poking at serious cultural issues. It’s the kind of listen that makes you laugh one minute and nod in recognition the next. A witty little survival guide for navigating the chaos of modern outrage.

This is a sharp, witty, and thought-provoking listen that skewers modern outrage culture with humor and insight. With biting satire and fearless commentary, it challenges listeners to question how far society has drifted from true free expression, all while keeping you laughing (and cringing) at the uncomfortable truths along the way.

This book does a good job of speaking that raw truth that so many people are just too afraid to say nowadays. If you want to grow some thick skin, this book will help you do just that.

Shhh! You’re Offended is one of those audiobooks that had me laughing out loud and shaking my head at the same time. Arthur Rantwell’s take on cancel culture and outrage politics is sharp, witty, and just the right amount of ridiculous. The humor is very British, dry, clever, and a bit cheeky, but underneath all the laughs there’s a really smart commentary about how we’ve started walking on eggshells just to have a normal conversation.

Highly recommend
