What happens when free speech isn’t cancelled by governments, but by hashtags, algorithms, and tutting strangers on Twitter?
Shhh! You’re Offended: The Death (and Afterlife) of Free Speech is a brilliantly funny and biting satire of outrage culture, cancel mobs, and the absurd lengths we now go to just to avoid offending anyone.
British satirist Arthur Rantwell takes listeners on a laugh-out-loud journey through the minefield of modern conversation, where every opinion is a potential scandal and every apology is a performance worthy of the West End.
Inside you’ll discover:
- Why social media outrage is Britain’s true national sport.
- How cancel culture follows a strict three-act play: Accusation, Apology, Redemption Tour.
- The rise of safe spaces, therapy otters, and beanbags as tools of survival.
- Why algorithms ban trifle photos but allow conspiracy theories.
- The absurd hacks people invent to avoid cancellation — parrots, emojis, and interpretive dance included.
- A glimpse into the future, where Parliament communicates entirely in jazz hands and comedians win BAFTAs for saying absolutely nothing.
Packed with parody case studies, tongue-in-cheek “survival tips,” and enough British wit to power the National Grid, this book is both a satire and a survival guide for anyone bewildered by the modern rules of speech.
Warning: May cause laughter, eye-rolling, or spontaneous tutting. Proceed at your own risk.

There are events that happen that are provided to share contrast with some of the silliness and jokes made. Perhaps some of the favorite parts to listen to are at the end, with discussions about the future of free speech, life after death, and the revival of free speech. There are even suggestions for getting by in a society with the new culturally accepted free speech norms.
All around, this book is funny, makes you think, and encourages reflection on how you carry yourself, perceive, and judge others, and what you may or may not take personally. I wouldn't say it minimizes the value and utility in words and language in terms of choosing words to mean what you intend. Either way, I enjoyed this and appreciate the humor and encouragement to set up a world of speech that aligns most closely with our goals and outcomes. Thank you!
well crafted! can't help but laugh!
