Publisher's summary

Sheriff Gus is the tired aging sheriff of a slowly decaying rural county. Gus and the county have both witnessed more prosperous times, but unlike many county residents at least Gus still has his job. That is until a fancy educated carpetbagger from the big city arrives to threaten the only thing Gus has left in the world to care about—his employment status. Just when it feels Gus's election chances couldn't be bleaker, beautiful young blonde women start turning up dead in his county. Can Gus figure out the identity of the murderer before they leave no one left alive to vote him back into office? It won't be easy since Gus has never had to solve an actual mystery in his life. If just once Gus can play the role of the good cop long enough then perhaps he can solve these murders and save the election cycle. There is only one problem with that scenario; no one has ever accused Gus of being a good cop and that includes Sheriff Gus. Gus must sort his way through the counties many odd facets; from pampered out of state college students attending the county's top ten party school and the newly arrived social climbing sub-urbanites to the familiar local county sleaze of drug dealers, gun runners, and politicians. Gus continuously finds himself lost without any good clues, suspects or sympathetic help but with plenty of friendly emus to keep him company. Sometimes the bad guy gets away and sometimes he even gets reelected to office.
