Along the way, I share the stories, strategies, and hard-won lessons from more than twenty-five years spent defending networks for the U.S. Department of Defense, Fortune 500 companies, and federal agencies.

This is not a textbook. It is part memoir, part field guide, part conversation. I wrote it the way I wish someone had talked to me when I was starting out... honest, practical, and without the jargon that makes this field feel more exclusive than it needs to be.

Humor, History, and Hard Lessons in Cybersecurity

I wish I could give 4.5 stars!

I went into Shepherding Electric Sheep not sure what to expect from a cybersecurity book in audiobook form, and came out genuinely impressed. I've only been in the IT industry for about four years, so a lot of the early history, the BBS days, the dial-up modem era, the pre-internet security landscape of the 80s and 90s, was completely new to me, and Brad walks through it in a way that actually makes you feel like you were there.

What really makes this book work is how it balances technical depth with accessibility. Brad has a knack for taking something genuinely technical and immediately grounding it with an analogy that makes it click, even if you're not a security specialist. There are also some really enjoyable touches of humor scattered throughout, along with cultural references that keep it fun and relatable rather than dry. This doesn't read (or listen) like a textbook at all, which was exactly what I was afraid it would be going in.

The book stays at a high level for most of its runtime, but it knows exactly when to dive deeper, just enough to really drive a point home without drowning you in jargon or technical minutiae. What ties it all together are the personal stories from Brad's own career alongside real-world events and major cybersecurity incidents, which give the history real weight instead of feeling like a list of facts.

The narration by Ronnie Heiseler was a pleasant surprise too, well-paced and easy to stay locked into for a book covering this much ground.

I'd recommend this to pretty much anyone in the IT world. If you're new to tech, there's a ton to learn here. If you've been in the industry a while, I think you'll still enjoy the trip through cybersecurity's evolution. And if you're just interested in cybersecurity given how much it's shaping the world right now, this is a genuinely enjoyable way to get up to speed.
