Publisher's summary

His life is chaos and confusion. It's a storm of uncertainty and raging emotion. Sutton Warner is a mess. Everything in his life feels like it's unraveling. He's let a lot of people down lately, including his daughter. Sutton always promised his little girl he would never disappoint her and that he would always be there when she needed him. Until he wasn't. The truth is, he's used to disappointing the women in his life. First was his mother who couldn't find a reason to stick around when he was growing up. Then there's his ex. The woman who takes unbridled delight in making his life incredibly complicated. Luckily, his daughter is still young enough to believe her old man is some kind of hero. But he knows the day is coming when she realizes the truth, that he's just a man with some serious flaws and a list of ever-growing weaknesses. Finally, there's the woman he's desperately trying to forget with every shot tossed back and each pill popped. He more than disappointed Emrys.... He almost got her killed. Her love is steady and sure. It's a shelter shaped by conviction and silent assurance.

Emrys Santos is lost. Everything in her life feels pointless and futile. She's been busy running away from her feelings and all the people who love her the most - including her best friend, the one person who knows exactly what she's been through. They promised to always stick together and to lean on one another. It was a promise Em had to break so she could lick her wounds and figure out her next move. For once, there is no easy way out of the tangled web of emotions she's caught up in, and right now, she recognizes that all roads lead back to Wyoming...and back to Sutton. The man she nearly got killed.

Shelter is a standalone novel, the second book in the Getaway series, which features the hardheaded and brokenhearted Warner brothers and the women who dare to love them. These boys are very good at putting the wild in wilderness.

A new favorite

Romance. Single dad. Mystery. Murder. Sexy times. Family. Pearl snap buttons. Shelter ticked all the boxes for me on what I believe makes a truest great book. I always enjoy Jay’s books but this one earned a place in my favorites!

Love Jay's stories. The narrators we're good BUT

I'm 45 and felt like I was listening to my mom and dad talking about sex (insert cringe here). I also couldn't tell the difference between the characters thoughts and what was actually being said out loud. I'll sample book 3 before buying for sure!

Great!!!

Loved Sutton and Emrys story! This book was full of emotions with characters who felt real and complex. This story had everything - action, suspense, drama, angst, and sexy times. Narration was perfect! This was the perfect romantic suspense and I highly recommend it!

Learn to Love

I was gripped by the opening of this book. I'm not a fan of abuse or evil people, so parts of this story were difficult to listen to for me. The book is full of vivid imagery, mystery, murder, deceit, hope, reconciliation, forgiveness, and love. I thought both of the narrators did an excellent performance and added the right suspense, tension and emotions.
This book is both part of a series and a standalone listen. It does not end in a cliffhanger. I would listen to more books by both the author and narrators. I requested a review copy of this audiobook and have voluntarily written this review. The main vibe I took away from this rollercoaster book, was learn to love.

broken, grumpy cowboy

The book opens up with Em and Sutton trying to evade some drug dealers but they are eventually caught. Em is assaulted and Sutton is shot...and almost dies. However, Sutton's brother, et al arrive in the nick of time to rescue the pair. Unfortunately, Sutton suffers from guilt that he was unable to prevent Em's assault and forced her to leave while he was still in the hospital. Forward a few months and Sutton is burying his guilt in alcohol. On one particular night, he is accosted at the bar by a local cowboy and accused of sleeping with the guy's wife. A fight ensues and Sutton ends right back in the hospital...turns out that he was close to OD on alcohol and Rx. For a twist...Em showed up at the bar just as the fight began! Em's bff is the gf of Sutton's older bro so there's no escaping seeing each other. There is undeniable chemistry between these two, but will they be able to move past the guilt that they each carry? Em feels guilty that Sutton was shot trying to defend her. Throw in Sutton's alcoholic 'ex', who is trying to gain full custody of their daughter and the drama is ON!! A couple of murders in, and it appears that someone is trying to set up Sutton. Amidst all of this drama, is the sweetest little girl who just wants her daddy to love her and be safe...que the 'awwww'. The book was so good that I could not find a good stopping point...so I stayed home from work until it was completed. The narration team was fantastic and brought the book to life. Now I need baby brother's story...

Great listen

What a great listen and fantastic narration to bring this story to life. The narrators has the perfect voices and tones and inflections to the characters to bring them to life and make this such an enjoyable read.

The story itself was phenomenal as well between the broody alpha, the strong heroine who is trying to put her pieces back together and the suspenseful plot twist that had me on the edge of my seat.

Can’t wait to dive into the next one

Like riding a horse

This story was like riding a horse for me. At first I wasn’t sold. I was annoyed by Em. I was pushed away by Sutton. But the stead voice kept me going. Not going to lie, the great narrators really kept me going. Then towards the end I got to the point I was over the drama. Some how, it all falls together and you just enjoy the ride.

Sweet, sexy romance

They help each other heal. But Sutton has a lot of bad luck that seems to complicate the story.
