Publisher's summary

NOW A PRIME VIDEO SERIES from internationally bestselling author Harlan Coben

Mickey Bolitar's year can't get much worse. After witnessing his father's death and sending his mom to rehab, he's forced to live with his estranged uncle Myron and switch high schools.

A new school comes with new friends and new enemies, and lucky for Mickey, it also comes with a great new girlfriend, Ashley. For a while, it seems like Mickey's train-wreck of a life is finally improving—until Ashley vanishes without a trace. Unwilling to let another person walk out of his life, Mickey follows Ashley's trail into a seedy underworld that reveals that this seemingly sweet, shy girl isn't who she claimed to be. And neither was Mickey's father. Soon, Mickey learns about a conspiracy so shocking that it makes high school drama seem like a luxury—and leaves him questioning everything about the life he thought he knew.

First introduced to readers in Harlan Coben's adult novel, Live Wire, Mickey Bolitar is as quick-witted and clever as his uncle Myron, and eager to go to any length to save the people he cares about. With this series, Coben introduces an entirely new generation of fans to the masterful plotting and wry humor that have made him an award-winning, internationally bestselling, and beloved author.

Young adult book

Would you try another book from Harlan Coben and/or Nick Podehl?

I like Harlan Coben a lot...and thus goofed by grabbing several of his books without reading the details. alas, the Mickey Bolitar series is for kids... adults may enjoy but it won't be able to identify with it. (But hey, if you like Harry Potter agewise, you may love this.) After 3 chapters I punted. I assume it is another great Coben book....but this one is too young for my taste.

If you’ve listened to books by Harlan Coben before, how does this one compare?

Not sure

Would you listen to another book narrated by Nick Podehl?

Not sure

Any additional comments?

Again, I missed the "young adult" label...and should have caught it. This sat in my library until too late to return.

Great Story for teens or adults!

This was a real surprise. I've enjoyed Coben's Myron Bolitar books but this is by far the best book I've read by him. It was a complex plot, used good vocabulary and didn't have the gratuitous sex that are in Coben's adult books.

Great stuff.

Usually I can figure out the story line right away, and then I follow it through. This one kept me guessing through out!

Young Adult

Ok, so its called "young adult fiction" and is told in the narrative of a 15/16 year old. I'm 58. Lol, I loved it! Idk if I could read the sequel just yet, but I will some day. (I wish I had been that savvy as a teen--definitely fiction :)). Good plot and story, but for me the magic was in the storytelling. I'm glad I purchased it on audible.

WOW - Powerfull

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Tying symbolism throughout the story and then ending with a blend of true history was genius. I thoroughly enjoyed how the story led up to the finish and could certainly move into another book or series.

Any additional comments?

I wasn't ready for the story to be over, though I was completely surprised at the end.

What made the experience of listening to Shelter the most enjoyable?

Characters are fun and narration made it even better. Earbud in grocery walking through isle listening it would be instant bursts of laughter when Spoon would talk. Had to turn it off until I left the store.

What does Nick Podehl bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Nick Podehl's got a fantastic voice for characters, bringing each a personality that makes them so much fun.

Any additional comments?

Fun listen with a good mystery and worth a listen.

What?!! Coben+YA=Amazing!!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Thoroughly enjoyed this book soooo excited about this series!!! Ok so I'm a Coben fan! I think he is a genius writer combining well written plots, characters and wit. But I have to admit I got a bit sick of the Myron Bolitar series and gave Coben up for good (or so I thought). I thought I would get back into him when I wondered onto these YA books. What?!??! Coben+YA= the best!! I know! I was very excited too! So we follow Mickey Bolitar who just so happens to be the nephew of....you got it!!....Myron Bolitar! This book is fantastic! Mickey is beyond like able he is downright impossible not to love. He befriends kids Ema (Emma's nickname from a bully) and Spoon (a nickname from Mickey) both of these friends are quirky, full of personality and hilarious. Mickey being the tall jock at a new school should be friends with the dull popular people (I used to be a pop highschooler we are boring!!) but instead Corben has him befriend these colorful and caring outcasts. So besides loving the well developed characters the plot is just as rich. It doesn't really seem young adult bc I was engulfed and challenged. The story is easy to follow and does not lose interest at any point. It is chalked full of several themes, plot stories and character development without being confusing!! (I don't know how Coben does this!) I'm already on to the next in this series and would suggest this book to any crime thriller fans!

Good read/listen

Where does Shelter rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

neutral.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked Mickeys friend. The girl. I cant think of her name (i read a lot) Shes was witty and always there with a comeback. And i liked Mickey too! He was so determined!

Have you listened to any of Nick Podehl’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Well i read the fallow up to this and i liked the first book way better....I liked THIS story line better than the second even though the second is part 2. If that makes any sense

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The ending!

Any additional comments?

This was a good book. I thoroughly enjoyed it :)
