A darkness approaches that only a fae can stop.
Evil forces threaten to cover the human world with darkness. The faerie world is dependent on the human world’s survival or they, too, will perish. Shayna, a faerie warrior of the light, is sent to the human world to prevent that from happening and must convince a human to help her.
When she reveals her true self to Detective Pierce Cochran, his world is thrust upside down. Everything he believed to be a fairy tale is true.
The faerie and the detective join forces against a growing number of demons and vampires, enlisting the help of an assortment of creatures Pierce didn’t know existed. Magic and weaponry collide as the mis-matched group of warrior’s race toward the final battle.

Narration was excellent and is what was what made this book worth listening to.

MC Shayna is the mightiest of Fae warriors, and is sent by her queen to earth to battle on the side of The Light against those on the side of The Dark. No...really! She immediately encounters MC Detective Pierce Cochran, reveals who she is and spends the rest of the book reminding herself that as a warrior she can't spare time to acknowledge her growing attraction to Pierce.
Actually, Shayna spends most of her time in the book expressing self-doubt in her abilities to make a difference, feeling better, expressing self-doubt, feeling better...and repeating this cycle. While there is an effort a world building, introducing lots of non-human species, and giving plenty of time to characters who will be featured as MCs in the next two books, the writing style isn't subtle or complex enough to really become immersive.
I almost want to say the material is campy fun, but I don't think it was aiming for campy. What works best is narrator Amy Deuchler's steadfastly serious and enthusiastic delivery of the material. The audiobook version is pretty entertaining as Shayna and her allies cross paths over and over with the villains they seem to be always looking for and swearing to kill.
There are leprechauns, dragons, demons, vampires and, of course, during the major battle of all forces..."ten foot bunnies" must be contended with!
If you like your fantasies on the silly side, while the material may or may not be intended as silly, I think you'll enjoy "Shayna" most as an audiobook. The three books in the series are available on KU if you want to sample the material before getting the audiobook. 2.75* for the story, 4* for the narration, 3* overall.

This was an interesting story. I liked the whole good vs. evil, light vs. dark theme. The biggest issue I had with the story was the supposed love aspect. Shayna and Pierce are in love by the end of the story. I never had the impression that either actually knew much about the other though. Both liked helping others, and both were attractive. Whenever Pierce thought of how much he cared for Shayna, he ended up thinking about her looks. There was nothing about her personality, nothing more in-depth about why he loved her. That just seemed questionable to me.
I felt the narrator did a good job. The only part of her narration that stuck out to me was how Shayna sounded. Maybe it was just me, I don’t know, but she came across as constantly sounding whiny. Again, that could have just been me. Otherwise, it was easy to tell which character was talking.
Questions/Comments:
Shayna told the guys that they wouldn’t have to take their armor off even when they showered. What about going to the bathroom? I know this was a fantasy aspect of the story, and I’ve heard that when it comes to fantasy, anything is possible, so no questioning should be involved, but still. How did none of the guys wonder about this? Am I weird because I did?
So, they knew a fight of some kind was going to be happening a specific night. What do they do in response? The four people (three detectives and Shayna) separate. Why? That made no sense to me. Given the other two detectives that Shayna isn’t 100 percent sure about, you’d think she would have wanted them all together.
A questionable mistake I came across. Shayna said that dragons lived the longest out of the Fae. Okay. She went on to say that they could live for centuries—essentially hundreds of years. THEN she said faeries like herself could live for hundreds of years. Keep in mind, this was said as though the dragons lived longer…but they both can live hundreds of years… There was no difference.
There was a part when Casdaya(?) mentioned that she’d heard one of the detectives had tried to help Dema(?) after Shayna knocked her out. Yet, she had no clue that no werewolves had been involved in the attack. How would that have been possible?
Speaking of Casdaya, how did she know that Pierce was part Fae just by looking at him when Shayna had to do her little hand-light test to confirm this?
Shayna knows the special water she got from the dragons is addictive. So, why in the world did she allow Dema to continuous drink it?
Lastly, a ton of time was spent training the detectives. Pierce becomes the new chief of police but seems to rarely be “at the office.” There was no mention, after the previous chief was killed, as to how all three men were able to continue on with the magical stuff as opposed to going to work.
I like the cover.
