Publisher's summary

Thousands of years ago, the gods fought and fell in the deeps beneath what is now Southmarch Castle, then were banished into eternal sleep. Now at least one of them is stirring again, dreaming of vengeance against humankind.

Southmarch haunts the dreams of men as well as gods. Royal twins Barrick and Briony Eddon, the heirs of Southmarch’s ruling family, are hurrying back home as well: Barrick now carries the heritage of the immortal Qar inside him, and Briony has a small army at her back and a fiery determination to recover her father’s throne and revenge herself on the usurpers.

The cruel and powerful southern ruler known as the Autarch of Xis wants the power of the gods for his own - a power he can only gain if he conquers Southmarch.

And nobody knows what the Qar want, only that the mysterious fairy-folk are prepared to die for it - or to kill every living thing in Southmarch Castle and in all the lands around.

It will come to an apocalyptic conclusion on Midsummer Night, when the spirits of the haunted past and the desperate struggles of the present come together in one great final battle. Many will die. Many more will be transformed out of all recognition, and the world will be forever changed.

Amazing set of books.

The first 200 pages of book 1 were slow, but once you get through them the story and character development are great.

great ending

I saw lots of people complaining about the narrator for a few books now, and it almost put me off. I'm glad I didn't listen. I thought he did a perfect job at conveying the emotions of the characters.

Tad Williams does not disappoint

I really enjoyed this series. It had everything required for good fantasy. Some of the reviewers didn't like the narrator, but I feel he was perfect for epic fantasy. It's sort of like having Dumbledore, Gandalf, or Captain Picard read to you.

The twins coming together is one of many

Best book of the series.

Hi Siri is good but this is definitely the best. Better written, better plot, not so much use of silly similes. Makes the entire series worthwhile. Definitely worth the time!

Just Ok

I have read several of Tad Williams books and have enjoyed them. I listened to this whole series and it was just Ok. It starts out very slow, and plugs along. If you buy the first book, listen to it before you buy any of the others. I got this whole series before I listened to it,because I had enjoyed the authors prior works. I will not do that again. I would not have bought this book if I had listened to the first book before buying.
