Publisher's summary

Mandy Harvey - a young woman who became deaf at age 19 while pursuing a degree in music - reads her inspiring story and how she overcame adversity and found the courage to live out her dreams.

When Mandy Harvey began her freshman year at Colorado State University, she could see her future coming together right before her eyes. A gifted musician with perfect pitch, she planned to get a music degree and pursue a career doing what she loved. But less than two months into her first semester, she noticed she was having trouble hearing her professors. In a matter of months, Mandy was profoundly deaf.

With her dreams so completely crushed, Mandy dropped out of college and suffered a year of severe depression. But one day things changed. Mandy's father asked her to join him in their once favorite pastime - recording music together - and the result was stunningly beautiful. Mandy soon learned to sense the vibrations of the music through her bare feet on a stage floor and to watch visual cues from her live accompaniment. The result was that she now sings on key, on beat, and in time, performing jazz, ballads, and sultry blues around the country.

Full of inspiring wisdom and honest advice, Sensing the Rhythm is a deeply moving story about Mandy's journey through profound loss, how she found hope and meaning in the face of adversity, and how she discovered a new sense of passion and joy.

What did you love best about Sensing the Rhythm?

Everything, beautifully read, amazing story and full of real wisdom thats isn't based on religion but based on common sense and clear insight! A rare find : )

What other book might you compare Sensing the Rhythm to and why?

The Hero with a Thousand Faces - Joseph Campbell : )

What does Mandy Harvey bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her beautiful voice! And as you listen to this book or listen to her music be sure to remind yourself she hasn't heard any of it!!! Truly amazing and also heartbreaking that she can't hear how truly gifted she is. The irony of this giant cosmic joke called life : )

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Don't let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do! ; )

Any additional comments?

Book of the Year

From the first paragraph through the end of the book, Mandy Harvey's story, message and voice captivated me, drew me in, and changed my world for the better.

Mandy is not showy or flamboyant -- she doesn't wow with big words or showy metaphors. Instead, she presents clear and memorable nuggets of truth with the humility, grace and depth that can only come through experience.

If you've ever experienced pain or loss, or know someone who has, this book offers rare answers. Mandy doesn't attempt to answer the "whys", but she provides first-hand insights into the "hows".

I'll be recommending this book -- specifically in audiobook form, as she imbues her own writing with warmth and feeling -- to anyone interested, for a long time to come.
