Publisher's summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F-ck and Get Your Sh-t Together comes more straight talk about how to stand up for who you are and what you really want, need, and deserve - showing when it's okay to be selfish, why it's pointless to be perfect, and how to be "difficult".

Being yourself should be easy, yet too many of us struggle to live on other people's terms instead of our own. Rather than feeling large and in charge, we feel little and belittled.

Sound familiar? Best-selling "anti-guru" Sarah Knight has three simple words for you:

You do you.

It's time to start putting your happiness first - and stop letting other people tell you what to do, how to do it, or why it can't be done. And don't panic! You can do it without losing friends and alienating people. Knight delivers her trademark no-bullsh-t advice about:

  • The tyranny of "just because"
  • The social contract and how to amend it
  • Turning "flaws" into strengths - aka "mental redecorating"
  • Why it's not your job to be nice
  • Letting your freak flag fly
  • How to take risks, silence the doubters, and prove the haters wrong

Praise for Sarah Knight:

"Hilarious...truly practical." (Booklist)

Typical life advice but with cursing

The author's "no bulls*t" advice is simply that she's cursing while giving advice and making it sound more dramatic than it actually is. For example, she gives the advice to be selfish - but with the caveat that you shouldn't hurt others in getting what you want. This is the same advice of "taking care of yourself first" expressed by so many others. This book is more for young adults who are just bumping into life obstacles and find the sample responses helpful.

So-so: Not as good as Get Your Shit Together

I struggled to finish this one. It was okay, but nothing profound. Get Your Shit Together was much better and more helpful.

Worth Every Penny!

Sarah Knight presents old and new ideas in a funny and witty way!!! I loved that the book and each chapter was long enough to present each idea without dragging on.

If you're looking for a reminder or confidence on how to be you, this is for you!

It's not very often I laugh out loud from a book, and I can't even count the number of times it happened w hole listening to this book.

Pure gold...

You Do You: Who You are and Use What You've Got to Get What You Want is another winning read by my new self-help guru/philosopher/audible mentor! It's so easy to know what you should know about yourself and just do it...but the truth is there are always those voices inside (and outside) that are always telling you I have always prided myself in being a strong person and yet the people pleaser in me is always doing exactly opposite of what I really want to do. If you can identify with my plight, don't waste another minute and dig into the world of Sarah Knight. I find her humor and honest voice to offer invaluable inspiration. Not only do I enjoy, the first read thru of her books but I find myself digging in often for re-reads whenever the need for reinforcement calls! I highly recommend the audible versions of her books as I love hearing her voice. I know it will take me a while to master all of the concepts in the book but just focusing on doing better for myself in any way possible has been a huge step in the right direction.

Totally Worth the Binge Listen

I picked this book up on sale and will be picking up the authors other books, even if I can't get them for a steal of $2. This is the kind of stuff I tell myself in my head, but sounds even better coming from someone else who took the time to write it down and read it to be. It's nothing that totally shook my world foundations, but that's okay. Sarah's voice is engaging once you get into it (she actually reminds me of Kristin Bell) and quickly makes her the best friend giving you the no BS pep talk you need. The book does get a bit repetitive in parts, mostly because the author outlines the chapters a few time, but for the most part I found it to be a fun and easy listen.

Witty and Convicting (slightly)

Sarah does a great job narrating her own book, for obvious reasons. The sprinkling of foul language catches your attention, making you realize, “shit, I haven’t been paying attention for the last 3 minutes”.

Sarahs use of humour is just hilarious, “a bit of fung shui mixed with Fuck that shit” is among my favourite lines of all time. Sarah seems to be an advocate for “do no harm, take no shit” which I myself like to live by. It’s okay to think about yourself first, you can’t pour from an empty, or rancid old cup. Treat yo self.

The advice is applicable, and it makes complete sense. Definitely filling out the PDF, and definitely listening again soon.

What was one of the most memorable moments of You Do You?

I loved the entire book. Sarah has some awesome lines that I will be quoting for years. Great book to empower people (focus on women) to take more control and live happier lives.

What about Sarah Knight’s performance did you like?

She is so real. Not only do you leave feeling like you know her, you feel like she has known you for years!

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

Quit over committing to crap you don't want or have time for "just to be nice".

Any additional comments?

I will likely listen to it 10 times.
