Publisher's Summary

Audie Award Winner, Personal Development, 2014

Best-selling author, speaker, and world-traveling success coach Jen Sincero cuts through the din of the self-help genre with her own verbal meat cleaver in You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life. In this refreshingly blunt how-to guide, Sincero serves up 27 bite-sized chapters full of hilariously inspiring stories, life-changing insights, easy exercises, and the occasional swear word.

Via chapters such as "Your Brain Is Your Bitch", "Fear Is for Suckers", and "My Subconscious Made Me Do It", Sincero takes you on a wild joy ride to your own transformation, helping you create the money, relationships, career, and general all-around awesomeness you so desire. And should you be one of those people who dreads getting busted with a self-help book in your hands, fear not.

Sincero, a former skeptic herself, delivers the goods minus the New Age cheese, giving even the snarkiest of poo-pooers exactly what they need to get out of their ruts and start kicking some ass. By the end of You Are a Badass, you will understand why you are how you are, how to love what you can't change, how to change what you don't love, and how to start living the kind of life you used to be jealous of.

What the Critics Say

"Sincero brings a fun, feminine verve to now well-tread self-help tropes... The tone is far more feisty than academic, and there's humor on every page, all of which is exactly what her intended audience most needs." (Publishers Weekly)

    "Title misrepresents tone of content"
What disappointed you about You are a Badass?

With a stand-out title like "You are a Badass", I expected a down-to-earth, rough around the edges perspective on the self-betterment theme. The LAST thing I expected was more of the same new-age speak that tends to pervade this genre. While the book contains chapters titled like "Your brain is your bitch", the actual content veers into discussions of communicating with the "source energy" of the universe, and "raising your vibrations" through meditation to fulfill your visions. The dissonance between how the book presents itself and the actual content was enough to prompt me to write this review to help inform future potential buyers.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The book is not without its helpful points and uplifting message- I did enjoy aspects of it. However, I'm offended by what seems to me to be a manipulative marketing angle using "curse words" in the title and chapter titles as an attempt to set this book aside from the sea of other self-development books that have similar content and approach.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

    The narration was great!

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from You are a Badass?

As editor, I would have strongly suggested the author remove or rework aspects that veer into new-age speak. "Raising your frequency", "vibrations", "source energy", "yoga", "mantras" are what a book titled "You are a Badass" should NOT contain. With as much time as this books spends on these topics, I'd suggest it be titled "Raising Your Vibrations: How to tap into the Source Energy of the Universe" - then readers would get what they paid for.

    Any additional comments?

The title / cover marketing of this book was successful in that they convinced me to buy the book, but a failure in conveying the mood of the content.

"The title is a perfect reflection of the contents"
What does Jen Sincero bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Jen's speaking style as she reads is really enjoyable. She is really funny and energetic and her speaking compliments the contents.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from You are a Badass?

Everything! I've listened to the book at least 3 times and go back whenever I need a little pick me up. Jen has a really great way of putting what you need to hear into a funny, witty way that is uplifting and motivating. I love that she provides a number of action items in every chapter and one of those is always..."love yourself".

    Any additional comments?

I've recommended this book to all of my friends. I absolutely love it and find many ways to apply the concepts to my daily life.

"Best reminder I've read in a long time!"

Every now and then we all need to be reminded just how much more we can be, and just how fast it's over. This book serves as a great reminder that you do as much as you can, have as much fun as you can, enjoy this planet as much as you can and love everyone around you as much as you can. Go do those things you love so much and do them now. Don't you dare look back in regret for what you didn't try...

    "An Agglomeration"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I probably wouldn't recommend this book to others. While the intent of the book is honourable (giving people inspiration and confidence to live a better life), the means to achieve it is what I can't get behind.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The story would have been more enjoyable if it was not filled with modern-day pseudo-science.

    Any additional comments?

The book is a mash-up of recent concepts, and the basic premise of the storyline is that you deserve abundance, and can achieve it by resonating at the right frequency, harmonizing with energy, manifesting events into being, and attracting what you want just by thinking intensely of it over time. As a guy with a science background, the book just went downhill the more I got through. On a positive note, I definitely appreciate it when the author reads their own material rather than someone who supposedly has the 'right' sound. Jen also has good enthusiasm and personality when reading through the book.

    "One Listen Changed My Life!"

I've been trying for 50 years (as an adult) to get my life together. I've read all the books and when I could remotely afford to, I went to seminars and airy-fairy weekends. This youngster comes along and in just a couple of hours gives me back a condensed version of all this wisdom in a way that made me want to -- uh, do the rest of my life like I mean it and tell it like it is. I'm selling on eBay and after a power outtage my computer would not start. I called around and was called "Ma'am" in a way that meant disrespect and told I need a new computer. I finally found someone who said he would replace the starter button for $20, but he did not call back as promised and got upset when I called to check on his progress. Three days went by. I am churning with Jen's awesome input about quit telling your stories (my car broke down; my computer runs Windows XP; I was the family scapegoat; I'm low-income; I'm probably too old and too fat, etc.) and take charge! Decide! Get up and do it! Well, then she offers many ways to get up and do it! She offers all kinds of easy strategies to "get there" from here, break it down into doable chunks, if you're really up for the trip. I tried a little meditation, asked God what to do with my Friday, and called the computer guy to say I want it today, fixed or not. When I got there, he gave me hell and watched me carry the huge CPU out to my car. I drove to another storefront which purported to be woman-owned. This precious Minnie Driver look-alike admired my old computer, got busy and gave me a "veterans discount." The shop was busy. I was happy to wait, thinking without the inspiration of Jen's neat book, I'd have been a victim and never met this wonderful computer goddess! Turned out she's the single mom of a two-year-old. She jumped out of an airplane at Burning Man to marry her true-love in 2008. They had crossed the country to live out west. He died two years ago sky-diving, may not have met his daughter. His widow keeps going, using what she learned from him to run his computer repair shop. And completed jobs are lined up on a shelf with their cords wound neatly on top of invoices ready for pick-up by pleased owners! It feels SO MUCH better to push out love and admiration than to sit grumbling in the gutter! . . . Jen says to envision, to dream. I know I don't have the money to travel; seen a lot already; I'm probably washed up for travel. Oh, no! They were talking on NPR about travel on the Dalmatian Coast which my parents had loved. Suddenly I listen with new ears thanks to Jen; I really want to see all that, try the foods, walk on the beaches! . . . The computer lady is going to install upgrades for me. Then I can do FB. If I still want to! Meanwhile some people ganged up on me in a FB group. It really hurt. I lost friends. I had the clarity to see their silly games and bail -- take care of myself, move on!

This is a powerful book! Jen has heard all the excuses. She knows all the traps. She talks fast giving all kinds of ideas in a great tumble of words. She touches on all kinds of problems that can hang us up for months or years. I have been diagnosed depressed and have kicked my meds. I know about depression, family pressure, music performance anxiety. Jen offers help for all these things. She has had the courage in her own life to try all sorts of wild and crazy things. She uses the F-word. As do I. To hell with people who turn off their ears and brains, stopped by a couple of word choices! She's had her own rock band and been to India. She has a website. Go see, watch her spiel on the home page. I believe a listen to this book would lift someone of any age, either sex, any body type, any ethnicity -- anyone who is not having the life they had hoped for. And I'm only on the second listen. Thank you, Jen! I love you!

    "Cheerleading at it's most enthusiastic"

This is like a reboot of The Secret that was so popular ten years ago. The concept is good, but not revolutionary. The author is her own biggest fan, which I found grating after a while. She repeatedly exclaimed how wonderful her life is because she believes it can and should be wonderful. I am happy for her but I do wonder how true the inverse is in her world view.

    "Finding your inner BadAss"
What did you love best about You are a Badass?

This Book will inspire you to be better....reminding & guiding you to be better than where you are now....

What was one of the most memorable moments of You are a Badass?

"There is nothing more unstoppable than a freight train of fuck yeah"....(Yep, she throws a few "F" bombs around haha)

Which character – as performed by Jen Sincero – was your favorite?

She does a great job with the presentation of the material.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from You are a Badass?

So many....a few stand out moments for me where regarding time & money. Showing "respect" to these two very important life spokes....she presents material in a very "Real" way. It's not a lecture....It's a "Hey, get your ass in gear....& get the fuck on the fuck"...haha (whatever that means:). It's all the great material from all the good books rolled into one. It's good. You will enjoy....

    Any additional comments?

I have read all the "Good Books"....This is the best....It's entertaining & inclusive of all the Good Lessons. She tells it to ya in a real way. I am a 48 year old Male. I loved it. Listening for the 5th time and don't ever plan to stop....it's a great resource.

    "Fantastic Read"

At first listen I didn't know what was happening. Jen's voice was so different from what you normally hear on Audible. But I returned a day later and I'm so glad I did. She's funny. And the material is, well, life altering. If you let it. Just finished and I'm excited to implement all these tips to start living like a badass.
