Publisher's summary

In Trans Like Me, CN Lester takes listeners on a measured, thoughtful, intelligent yet approachable tour through the most important and high-profile narratives around the trans community, turning them inside out and examining where we really are in terms of progress.

From the impact of the media's wording in covering trans people and issues to the way parenting gender variant children is portrayed, Lester brings their charged personal narrative to every topic and expertly lays out the work left to be done.

Trans Like Me explores the ways that we are all defined by ideas of gender - whether we live as he, she, or they - and how we can strive for authenticity in a world that forces limiting labels.

Extremely thoughtful, nuanced, and well narrated

I found this to be a really interesting and thought-provoking discussion of gender identity. It blends the author’s very personal experiences with thoughtful and nuanced discussions of the history of nonbinary gender identity and their relationship to different varieties of feminism. I’d recommended this book to readers looking for a more intellectual discussion of gender identity.

Excellent!

I love this book! There are elements of Trans History that are often neglected and it was wonderful to hear a Trans writer speak on this information. Too often, it's neglected or simply overlooked. Excellent narration throughout!

This book stretches me

I am happy to say that this book stretches both my brain and heart. I have read and listened to many books by or about transgender people. This one is well worth all the mental effort you'll put in to understand it. In fact, I've listened to this book at least three or four times now, and each time I've gained something new. This is the one I keep coming back to, in between the lighter reads, and I won't be done with it any time soon. It has all the emotional impact one might hope for in a personal narrative read by the author. They offer amazing insight into what it means to be trans. CN Lester challenges us to search deeper inside ourselves for empathy, not just for trans people, but for all people who could be lifted by society and are not yet. In their own words, "When we assume that progress is a done deal, we are turning our backs on those who have experienced no progress at all. When we assume that the arc of history will bend toward justice, we stop working to make it so." This book makes me want to wake up and do more. It makes me want to be kinder, be a better version of myself, and lift others along the way.

An Essential Piece of Trans Literature

This book is a great contribution to trans literature, and is a book of this point in history. I believe that this book will come to be seen as important in trans literature as Gender Outlaw and Whipping Girl. CN Lewis did great work and has put into words things I have had trouble expressing in my own life. This book is relevant, keen, and important. A must read for anyone interested in gendered issues

A Worthwhile Read!

This book is a godsend. A combination of trans narrative(s), statistical presentation, and the showing of pros and cons of modern day transgender living—and many more points that are presented in this text—Trans Like Me gave me comfort and an awareness of self that I’ve not yet felt/realized in other books (yet). C.N. Lester’s own experiences sucker-punched me and had me repeat their lines over and over again, each time resonating deeply in my own understanding of my gendered self.
Needless to say, I’d highlight it all and post it on a quoting board, if I could. Wonderful, humbling and thoughtful.

An essential perspective

I am trans myself so what i say can not be without its biases
that said this is a well stated and tempered look at who and what we are without bogging the issues down with politics or flying off into personal sexuality.or fetishes.

i wish I had something like this when i was figuring myself out.
it would have helped me through years of self destruction and doubt.

Recommended for everyone but especially anyone who wants to open their heart and meet a well spoken transgender person

Full disclosure, I am a transgender woman who transitioned late in life. I found this book extremely powerful and informative. I especially appreciate the big tent and open arms offered to the broadest gender nonconformity community across myriad identities and timelines. Narration beautifully done. They deserve great praise for this important work.

 Victim blaming

Overall unique perspective a little of this book is based on facts or study, but it is primarily story, and how things have made him feel. Not necessarily insightful or educational, but pitiful.
