Publisher's summary

If you are one of the 70 million Americans counting on your 401(k) plan to usher you into a comfortable old age, you're likely to be bitterly disappointed. Rather than benefit the employee, 401(k) plans reward employers, brokers, investment advisors, fund managers, insurance companies, unions, and lobbyists. Relying on these plans makes it increasingly difficult to retire comfortably.

In his straight-forward, no-nonsense style, best-selling author Daniel R. Solin offers the new rules for investing for retirement. He shows readers how to quickly and simply determine their own needs, get control of their assets, avoid scams and sucker bets, discover untapped resources at retirement, and eventually get income out of tax deferred plans - the smart way.

Old School Advice

For its time the advice may not have been bad but it still lacks whole areas of considerations, like tax avoidance strategies. The author’s recommended Roth IRA option doesn’t beat a Traditional IRA if your yearly withdrawal amounts during retirement equal the standard IRS tax deduction, and you make up the rest of your yearly expense needs by withdrawing from a taxable brokerage account that’s subject to long term capital gains tax. With this strategy investing with the deferred tax Traditional IRA option allows you to invest the tax savings in a taxable brokerage account and grow your wealth even more. But the author says “go with a Roth IRA” and just leaves it at that. This is just one example.

A must read

I found the book very helpful, and applied many of the investment tips. It also led me to read, A Random Walk Down Wallstreet,The little Book of Common Sense Investing, and the Smartest Money book You'll Ever Read. I've loved Arthur Morey (narrator) since, The Evolution of God. If you need ideas on how to get started, you'll love this book. It is simple and based on other readings it is truthful!

Out of date

Over a decade old. Not to mention this book needs a 5 minute legal disclaimer at the end.

Succinct and packed with valuable information

This is a solid overview of investment choices. I found myself mentally checking off different current investments and taking away good nuggets of advice for each.

A good time investment

The effect of fees has me reconsidering my approach. The section about the TSP was a surprise.

Great start

Great start. Great for learning the anatomy of the 401k and 403b system. I still need to learn more to know exactly what to do actually with funds. Would be great to have a “choose your own adventure” investment strategy book in order to weed through the options in a practical way.

401k is not considered a Long Term Investment

If you regularly save money and you use a 401k to do so you need to listen to this Book, its packed with useful information, take advantage of the Tax Rates of Long term capital Gains on your savings which will not apply on your 401k even though you potentially be saving there for decades.

Disappointed

The book wasn't really sharing techniques, was more of broad explaining The 401k types
