Publisher's summary

Deepak Chopra, Debbie Ford, and Marianne Williamson - New York Times best-selling authors and internationally acclaimed teachers - have joined together to share their knowledge on one of the most crucial obstacles to happiness we face: the shadow. These three luminaries, each with a signature approach, bring to light the parts of ourselves we deny but that still direct our life. For it is only when we embrace our shadow that we discover the gifts of our authentic nature.

The shadow exists within all of us. It is a part of us and yet we spend most of our life running from it. But far from being scary, our dark side holds the promise of a better, more fulfilling life. Our shadow makes itself known every day. It is the reason we get furious over a friend showing up 10 minutes late, yell at our parents or kids when they have done nothing wrong, and sabotage our own success at the worst possible time. Until we are able to embrace our dualistic nature, we will continue to hurt ourselves and those closest to us and fall short of our potential.

Combining the wisdom of three experts, The Shadow Effect is a practical and profound guide to discovering the gifts of our shadow. These three authors powerfully pierce the veil of our unclaimed self, releasing us from the past and propelling us on a journey to wholeness. No longer living a half life, we are capable of achieving our dreams and reclaiming the happiness that is our birthright.

Personally Helpful

This book is full of helpful insights related to the "dark side" or "the shadow" we all have. In the first section of the book Deepok Chopra defines the shadow and places it in psychological/sociological context. In later sections Marianne Williamson and Debbie Ford contribute insights from their points of view. All of the sections have made me stop, think, and make application to my own daily life.

Specifically, Chopra includes a discussion of projection in the first section. He defines it clearly, gives specific examples, and details how one can avoid the pitfalls associated with projection. I found that portion of the book most practical and helpful.

I have not accepted Chopra's point of view, but find insights in each of his books which I can use in my own daily life. The inclusion of Williamson and Ford in this book works well.

Written and read by the authors, this volume is worth consideration.

like it

if you have ever wondered why you do surprising things, things not quite in step with your normal character, this book can help you understand that and more.

i enjoyed all three sections of the book. the section by Williamson sometimes reminded me a bit of talking to my christian science great-uncle, but i enjoyed her sincerity and her search for authenticty and peace. i was not familiar with Debbie Ford either but i enjoyed her section. i found her use of examples to be illuminating.

the Chopra section is the one i have listened to most, several times, in fact. he is very practical and knowledgeable about jung and freud, and in his section is building on their work. if you find either of those men interesting, you will find this interesting too.

all three authors stress compassion and patience with the self, as well as personal responsibility. one of the themes of the book is revealing why we are so judgemental with each other and how we can stop. it certainly made me think. all in all, a great book.

An inspring book

If you are not fulfilled in your life, this book will be a MUST-READ book. One of the cores of the book is focusing on our dark side, SHADOW, which many people try to ignore or suppress to head for bright aspects of their life. But SHADOW is like a beach ball held in the water and therefore it can come up to the surface anytime. Instead, the authors recommend us to embrace both bright and shadow sides of our life so that we will be healed and fulfilled. So if you are tired to read "positive thinking books" this book will be a breakthrough. But the concept in the book is not new. Dr Demartini has been teaching the concept since years ago. I strongly recommend you to read both this book and Dr Demartini's books to deepen your understandings.

There are two parts to all of us

Most people don’t even realize their suppressing part of themselves. We hear that little voice in our head to take a chance or not to take a chance then we ignore it. That is the part you're suppressing. I have friends that won’t do anything that they haven’t done before and their lives are cookie cutter cutouts of the day before. They say they want to change and if you suggest ways they explode. They have large amounts of suppressed anger and rage toward life and people in them. They also walk around all day with a face on that says ‘life if perfect’ and they do this at home as well. Then one day they just can’t do it anymore and everything come tumbling out. This is their Shadow and it is the part they’ve suppressed. Beside Shamanic work I haven’t seen nor heard of anyone putting together this much information in one place to help people deal with it. I’m not a fan of Deepak, so for me to say I’ve passed this book on to others is a huge deal. Give it a go and may learn something that will with time improve your life.

It really made me think

I normally don't read books of the genre, but I'm really glad that I came across this one. I really enjoyed this and would certainly recommend it.

All Connected is the key...

I enjoyed this book and find I am listening to it again. There is a lot of good information as a fan and believer in Debbie Ford, Deepak Chopra's work and much of Marianne Williamson's inspiration (though I do not share her belief in The Course In Miracles but much of the content extracted). I thought that it was
"abridged" because it did become redundant in sections; so could have been a bit shorter in Debbie and Marianne's portions for my taste. The information was solid and all reiterating what they had written about before; the reference to Jame's Fowler's "Connected" caught me by surprise because I ran across this book and purchased it here earlier this year by what I thought was "accident" at the time.....hmmm...

average

This is a very simple audio, Debbie Ford is the most significant speaker. Deepak Chopra just keeps rehashing the same information in different audiobooks for what appears to be financial gain. Less spiritual and organic in my view.
