Show Up and Let Yourself be Seen

Is vulnerability the same as weakness? “In our culture,” teaches Dr. Brené Brown, “we associate vulnerability with emotions we want to avoid such as fear, shame, and uncertainty. Yet we too often lose sight of the fact that vulnerability is also the birthplace of joy, belonging, creativity, authenticity, and love.” On The Power of Vulnerability, Dr. Brown offers an invitation and a promise - that when we dare to drop the armor that protects us from feeling vulnerable, we open ourselves to the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. Here she dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and reveals that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage.

The Power of Vulnerability is a very personal project for me,” Brené explains. “This is the first place that all of my work comes together. This audio course draws from all three of my books - it’s the culmination of everything I’ve learned over the past twelve years. I'm very excited to weave it all into a truly comprehensive form that shows what these findings and insights can mean in our lives.”

Guidance and Insights for Wholehearted Living

Over the past twelve years, Dr. Brené Brown has interviewed hundreds of people as part of an ongoing study of vulnerability. “The research shows that we try to ward disappointment with a shield of cynicism, disarm shame by numbing ourselves against joy, and circumvent grief by shutting off our willingness to love,” explains Dr. Brown. When we become aware of these patterns, she teaches, we begin to become conscious of how much we sacrifice in the name of self-defense -and how much richer our lives become when we open ourselves to vulnerability.

“In my research,” Dr. Brown says, “the word I use to describe people who can live from a place of vulnerability is wholehearted.” Being wholehearted is a practice—one that we can choose to cultivate through empathy, gratitude, and awareness of our vulnerability armor. Join this engaging and heartfelt teacher on The Power of Vulnerability as she offers profound insights on leaning into the full spectrum of emotions—so we can show up, let ourselves be seen, and truly be all in.

    "So moving..."

This was the most worthwhile audiobook (or book of any kind) that I've ever experienced. I mean, I know there's such thing as runner's high, but book high? Wow...unexpected. Brené is lively, vulnerable, flawed, and so brave and human in her talks that it really helped me to feel more comfortable opening up. The many laughs I had and lessons I learned were so valuable, so deeply valuable. It's worth saying that it really works in terms of "me too" instead of "how to." So while it lacked the precise instruction some may feel they need, it didn't feel like anything was missing for me. We all have different lives and ways of doing things, so we can't all use the same "how to." But having someone, in such a heartfelt and humorous way, say "me too?" Well, for me, it made taking that walk into vulnerability just a bit easier...which made such a difference for me on my personal journey. This will not tell you that you can avoid vulnerability, it will not give you an easy way out. What it will do is show that we're all in this boat together, we're not alone, so when taking these hard steps into vulnerability, even if someone laughs or we make a fool of ourselves, it's okay. We don't have to be perfect, we don't have to try to be perfect, and why would we want to, when we have nothing to prove anyway? Many heartfelt thanks to the author for her funny, beautiful insight into life, I'm truly grateful.

This was a real eye opener. This audio of a seminar cuts to so many things most of us do to keep from being real. It opens up a lot of possibilities. I am definitely going to check out other titles by this author.

    "Perfect Accidental Read"

I painted my bathroom this weekend. I wanted to listen to something great as I worked. Coming across this book was the best unplanned read that I've ever had. Halfway through I recommended it to nearly everyone I know. So great, on point, and terribly and terrifically relatable!!

This is one of the best books I have ever heard. It challenges you, while at the same time teaching you in real and sometimes hilarious ways why authenticity and vulnerability are so important to being the real you and living a full life.

"Does that Make Sense?"in Every Paragraph Ruined It"
What didn’t you like about Brené Brown’s performance?

I wanted to love this book as it came to me highly recommended. But after listening to about 45 minutes, i simply couldn't listen to any more of the authors use of what seemed like a nervous language tick when she would ask rhetorically every other sentence, "Does that make sense?" Of course it made sense, what didn't make sense was her senseless use of that phrase. It reminded me of a valley girl repeatedly using the word "like" at the beginning of her sentences. For that reason, it was difficult to listen to, and I didn't find the material all that interesting or surprising, but I'm giving it four stars for overall and story, because the issue of shame is big for a lot of people and I can see how it might be perceived as revolutionary to some. Maybe I could've had a different experience if I had read the book. But now that I have "Does that make sense? Does that make sense?" etched in my brain, I don't think I ever will.

    "very good quality book"
If you could sum up The Power of Vulnerability in three words, what would they be?

    deep, emotional, healing

What did you like best about this story?

This is not your everyday self- help book, no "how- to" guide. It takes you on a deep and emotional quest, yet staying realistic and relatable. It will hit home with so many of us, that need a bit of clarity and tools to set some behaviours into context.

    "Brene Brown issimply amazing"
What did you like most about The Power of Vulnerability?

I never write reviews but Brene Brown is simply amazing.
She uses grounded research which for me is the best. Her work is authentic and original and she has the courage to tackle the most difficult subjects and her findings are extremely valuable and definitely not the run of the mill, ordinary almost anticipated findings.
On top of all of this it is an amazing experience to listen to her speak, Her authenticity, originality, humour, constant clear presentation, down to earth, matter of fact way makes her a joy to listen to, not to mention the huge benefits and relevancy of her excellent work to probably everyone.
I cannot praise this woman and her work enough, she is simply genius.

    Hell yes!

Which character – as performed by Brené Brown – was your favourite?

    N/A

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Absolutely

    Any additional comments?

I love this book, it's wonderfully insightful and sometimes painfully true.I felt a much greater affinity with this book than with some of Brene's other work because I am not a facts and figures type of gal. This book, whilst still based on Brene's qualitative research, also contains lots of human stories which resonated with me. I love the way Brene herself was so courageously vulnerable in it.
