Show Up and Let Yourself be Seen

Is vulnerability the same as weakness? “In our culture,” teaches Dr. Brené Brown, “we associate vulnerability with emotions we want to avoid such as fear, shame, and uncertainty. Yet we too often lose sight of the fact that vulnerability is also the birthplace of joy, belonging, creativity, authenticity, and love.” On The Power of Vulnerability, Dr. Brown offers an invitation and a promise - that when we dare to drop the armor that protects us from feeling vulnerable, we open ourselves to the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. Here she dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and reveals that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage.

The Power of Vulnerability is a very personal project for me,” Brené explains. “This is the first place that all of my work comes together. This audio course draws from all three of my books - it’s the culmination of everything I’ve learned over the past twelve years. I'm very excited to weave it all into a truly comprehensive form that shows what these findings and insights can mean in our lives.”

Guidance and Insights for Wholehearted Living

Over the past twelve years, Dr. Brené Brown has interviewed hundreds of people as part of an ongoing study of vulnerability. “The research shows that we try to ward disappointment with a shield of cynicism, disarm shame by numbing ourselves against joy, and circumvent grief by shutting off our willingness to love,” explains Dr. Brown. When we become aware of these patterns, she teaches, we begin to become conscious of how much we sacrifice in the name of self-defense -and how much richer our lives become when we open ourselves to vulnerability.

“In my research,” Dr. Brown says, “the word I use to describe people who can live from a place of vulnerability is wholehearted.” Being wholehearted is a practice—one that we can choose to cultivate through empathy, gratitude, and awareness of our vulnerability armor. Join this engaging and heartfelt teacher on The Power of Vulnerability as she offers profound insights on leaning into the full spectrum of emotions—so we can show up, let ourselves be seen, and truly be all in.

    "Great for everyone!"

My therapist suggested this read when I was having trouble finding compassion for selfish family and friends. This book changed my mindset in many ways especially with issues I believed I was doing great with. I bring up chapters from this audiobook to discuss in therapy and it has helped build on solutions and personal goals. Highly recommend!!

    "Listen after "Daring Greatly""

This is my third time with a piece by Brene and I'm glad I got this one after I had finished "Daring Greatly". Yes, you're going to hear some similar stories but the delivery is much more personal, conversational and real. I am moved to develop and cultivate vulnerability and will keep this one in the library for good.

Listened to this audiobook on road trip on our 10th wedding anniversary and it really has showed us how to take our relationship to another level and to also be able to share the teachings from Brene Brown's research with our 7 children.

"Deceptively simple title for so much wisdom"

I'm going through a very tough period in my life and Brené Brown's "The Power of Vulnerability" has given me much to think about as I analyze how I got to this point, what I can do to get through it, and how I want to move forward as I heal and grow. Under the heading of vulnerability, the author packs a whole lot of very powerful concepts which she illustrates with beautifully recounted narratives from her own life. I'm all the way over here in Singapore and very far from her cultural context of Texas. But there's a universality to her material, at least in the way she has chosen to convey it, which resonates with me. Her voice reaches out to you with warmth and vibrates with love and understanding. I might not agree with all her definitions but within the parameters that she has set, I think she's done a great job of repackaging her academic research for a general public that is seeking answers to painful questions.

"There are a lot of gold nuggets, but it's still self-help"

I listened to this on a long drive. I though that the central message that people should be more vulnerable was compelling. That said, real strength, character, maturity, and wisdom come from being able to be vulnerable, and she didn't go much past that being vulnerable is good for you. Also, she talked far too much about her life and her family, which was a bit obnoxious. I know it's supposed to show that she not only knows this theoretically, but has also lived it, but she would have been far better served by simply providing paradigmatic examples that weren't weighed down by all the baggage that comes from making it personal. Overall, I learned some very neat things, and I'm happy I listened to the lecture series, as I found a lot of good stuff to incorporate into my own life.

    "Informative, entertaining, transformative"
What about Brené Brown’s performance did you like?

Brene Brown is a fantastic speaker. She conveys her information in a way that is easily digestible while still being entertaining. It is clear she is passionate about her work. Even though this was a speech/workshop, I felt like she was aware that I was part of her listening audience even if I wasn't present.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The last two hours where she talked about wholehearted living were particularly useful. She gave examples of how to create a more wholehearted life.

    Any additional comments?

I loved this speech/workshop because Brene Brown talked about what all of her research since 2001 has revealed and what we can learn from it. She is a fantastic speaker. The information and her delivery of it was so gripping I didn't want to stop listening.

    "Powerful, Enjoyable, and Enlightening"

This is my first Audible experience with Dr. Brown. Right from the start she captures your attention. She draws you in as if you were attending her seminar using humor, authentic stories, along with clear explanations of her research. Her explanation of "shame" and the control it has over our lives was a revelation beyond measure. I will add her other books to my collection. She is amazing and connects with her audience powerfully!

    "Wow!"
    Any additional comments?

Brené Brown is fantastic! I loved her TED talk from a while back, and heard she had published a book (Daring Greatly) and found this when I looked for the book. I opted for this over the book because Brené is SUCH an engaging story teller, and from the snippet of Daring Greatly, it sounded like Siri was doing the narrating. This did not disappoint--AT ALL. She is witty, smart and so honest (even when the honesty isn't so pretty, like the cookie story). She has a way of making all of this seem so logical, and making us feel like we are all in it together. Sure, it's a little self-helpy, but in a really intellectual way, not in a preachy hand-holding new-agey way. I have recommended this to lots of friends. If you get nothing else out of it, at least you will enjoy Brené's hilarious stories. I will likely read Daring Greatly at some point, versus going the audiobook route, since I'd like to hear her energy and enthusiasm in my head when I read it.

Brené Brown is a great storyteller, providing insights in a very personable and relatable manner. Recommended to nearly all my friends, that's how much I enjoyed. The only thing that put me off a little is the new age intro tune/voice between the chapters lol but that only lasts 10 seconds!

    "Listen with your heart....."

I have listened to this book 3 times in as many weeks and learned so much each time. My advice would be to listen with your heart, rather than your head. This is not a left-brain, intellectual exercise. The third time I fully engaged with Brene's wise words, which come straight from her own experiences and her open heart. This finally broke through my walls and enabled me to embrace my own vulnerability - and the shame I've held inside for so long started to melt away.

Brene's humourous presentation make the content ever more memorable. Thanks Audible - a real gem, so glad I found it!
