Publisher's summary

The Dhammapada is a collection of sayings of the Gautama the Buddha in verse form and one of the most widely read and best known Buddhist scriptures. This is volume one of a 12-volume series of Osho Talks, where Osho brings Buddha's Dhammapada into the 21st century, opening them for a new understanding for contemporary mankind.

In alternating chapters, Osho comments on specific sutras of Buddha and responds to questions from his audience, deepening the understanding of these timeless works. "My talking on Buddha is not just a commentary: It is creating a bridge. Buddha is one of the most important masters who has ever existed on the Earth - incomparable, unique."

The setting of these talks is an open-air auditorium at the Osho International Meditation Resort in Pune, India. Osho and his audience sit surrounded by trees, and the elements of nature - the chirping of birds, wind, and the cracking bamboos as well as the distant sound of the local Pune-Mumbai morning train - are all parts of these recordings and give them a truly existential flavor.

Osho employs his penetrating insight and wonderful humor to remove the dust of many misunderstandings gathered on Buddha's teachings and again emphasizes meditation over dogma, meditation being Buddha's greatest contribution to the development of human consciousness.

"Buddha transformed the word meditation. Meditation had always been something of the mind, and Buddha brought a new quality, so totally new, diametrically opposite to the old meaning: He said meditation means a state of no mind. It is not concentration; it is not contemplation. It is not thinking; it is not thinking about God. It is not even prayer, because thinking is of the head, intellectual; prayer is emotional. That is another side of the head, not very far away from it - a different language used by another part of the head."

Osho Talks are "meditating talks", allowing the listener an experience of meditation. "These words of Buddha come from eternal silence. They can reach you only if you receive them in silence."

We are what we think

Osho at his best, giving inspiring discourses about Buddha's Dhammapada.

In addition, listening to Osho provides a beatiful framework for getting insight into Buddha's sayings.

Wise

I loved this method simply because he talks to people, not at people. Much respect is gained this way.

Don’t watch the finger; watch where it’s pointing

Osho’s series on the Buddha and the Dhammapada have all been spectacular. I’m always awaiting the next vol. I think we’re at 10 now?! I could listen to him, speak all day and kind of do already. Lol.

Best spiritual teacher today

I don't think there is any other teacher call Ma that explains spirituality quite the way that Osho does. The clearest explanation that I have found. Vernon Howard might be second but his explanations and teachings are not nearly as clear and concise.

Liberation In Words

A total new way of looking at the world by identifying all of the concepts that imprison us. These concepts we never even think to take a look at!!!

this is a paid for program. It is not free.. they want $200 before they will even tell you about the technique.

this is a paid for program it is not free. They want $200 before they even tell you about it. I need that money for heating my home this winter so I am going back to the Vipassana. The passenger is free and you can make a donation at the end if you feel that you got something out of it. these guys want money upfront, is because you wouldn’t pay them after hearing it. Inner engineering is a technique for people with money.

Needs editing badly

What disappointed you about The Dhammapada, Vol. 1?

I bought & read the entire set of DP commentaries by Osho. There are intensely beautiful jems buried in the lengthy wandering. The wandering could be trimmed.

What was most disappointing about Osho’s story?

I am convinced Osho is an enlightened master but his commentaries wander all over. I have to wander w/ him to find the gems, i.e. his simple exploration of the title: Dhammapada. I would have liked a better comparison/explanation of "pure mind" w/ no-mind.

Would you be willing to try another one of Osho’s performances?

No. I have all his books heavily annotated. Time to review.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

*** Intensely beautiful jems*** buried in the lengthy wandering...

Any additional comments?

Osho's disciples do him a disservice by publishing verbatim.

Ego

Any additional comments?

I have seen a number of selections by this "Oslo" individual. So I thought I might take a look-see and listen. This guy wastes no time in letting you know how his way is vastly superior to that of the Buddha. Unfortunately, the author continues to remind you at every turn of the superiority of his way versus that of the inferior way of the Buddha. Obviously this fellow is on quite the ego trip. I dare say he wouldn't make a large pimple on the enlightened behind of the Buddha.
