Publisher's Summary

Our "30-is-the-new-20" culture tells us that the twentysomething years don't matter. Some say they are an extended adolescence. Others call them an emerging adulthood. But 30 is not the new 20. In this enlightening book, Dr. Meg Jay reveals how many twentysomethings have been caught in a swirl of hype and misinformation that has trivialized what are actually the most defining years of adulthood.

Drawing from more than 10 years of work with hundreds of twentysomething clients and students, Dr. Jay weaves the science of the twentysomething years with compelling, behind-closed-doors stories from twentysomethings themselves. She shares what psychologists, sociologists, neurologists, reproductive specialists, human-resources executives, and economists know about the unique power of our 20s and how they change our lives. The result is a provocative and sometimes poignant listen that shows us why our 20s do matter. Our 20s are a time when the things we do - and the things we don't do - will have an enormous effect across years and even generations to come.

"Essential reading for every 20 something"

Meg Jay is the shot of adrenaline that every struggling 20 something needs. She doesn't push, or lecture but rather presents sobering facts and nudges helpfully.

    "Excellent - Time Well Spent"
What made the experience of listening to The Defining Decade the most enjoyable?

    Any additional comments?

My twenty two year old daughter just graduated from college and will be moving out of state. My wife listened to the audio version and bought two hard cover copies, one for our daughter and one for our twenty something son who lives in another city. It must have struck a chord as these young adults couldn't put it down, and asked if Meg Jay had any other books (not yet).

    "Amazingly Insightful!"

This book was amazingly insightful! I am twenty-five years old and was definitely struggling to make sense of my life in this decade and I now know that the "perfect life" doesn't just come, it is one that is worked and prepared for. The twenties are a time of preparing, planning, and investing in the kind of life that we want by living intentionally--We prepare by paying attention to ourselves and to our lives, by knowing what we hope to accomplish and having a plan to get there! Thanks Dr. Jay for this awesome book! It has changed my life.

"Wishing Jay was a close aunt"

I graduated last year from college and felt a lot like the stories I heard in Jay's book. Doing lots of driving and moving between part time jobs I did a lot of marauding and probably a lot of procrastination. This book is not for everyone, as I listened attentively when I played this audiobook in the car and my 15 year old sister would roll her eyes and listen to hear own music. But I've been in search of a book like this, one that feels more like a really sincere conversation with an relative as opposed to a misinformed counselor or self invested politician.
Jay has an ability in this book to address many of the anxieties and issues we search for success and learn to deal with our emotions.
Instead of soothing or scaring you she presents her insight of various clients from our generation. The stories of other twenty-year olds we hear are a great exercise to see ourselves in their shoes and begin to react more with reason than emotion and realize the road is a long one.
I'm quite glad I added this book to my library would highly recommend it to any young adult looking or wanting to take massive action toward career or personal development.

TLDR: Jay drops some pretty deep thoughts about learning how to adult and it sounds pretty legit.

    "Insightful"

I am 24 and this book is what I needed at this moment. It helps me to realize that planning life is essential especially in the 20 somethings. Great work but she didn't get any personality to the book even though it is hers.

    "Useful even at 30"

Gives perspective of how to dodge or dig out of mistakes made when 30. Gives perspective on marriage and life success and how to attain these and succeed VS slide into these and hope for the best. In an age without much direction or mentors... this helps redirect the life you want into your hands... the likely culprit that was keeping you from the life you want to live.
