Publisher's summary

The practice of meditation, according to Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, is like the power of the sun, illuminating the areas of our life that dwell in darkness. Instead of suppressing anger, fear, and guilt, Hanh suggests that we should be mindful of these emotions, which will allow our natural patience and appreciation for life to unfold. Recorded during an intimate family retreat, The Art of Mindful Living presents Thich Nhat Hanh's practical, traditional gathas (teachings) that join ancient meditation practice with the challenges of the modern world. It includes step-by-step guides to meditation, breathing exercises, contemplation, and communication, opening our hearts and minds to the joyous wonder of tranquility and love.

Good message, recording awful

The message thay gives is great (you can read about the content elsewhere). As for the audiobook quality itself, it's awful. Thay does a good job of repeating himself when his accent might have been unclear, but the audio quality is terrible. It was recorded during a lecture, so there's a lot of background noise (coughs, sneezes, people moving about), and the microphone wasn't in the right place. All-in-all it makes it hard to listen to. You can listen to it, but I found it a struggle.

life-changing.....

I agree with the previous reviews that there is SOME background noise, but if you listen to this on a quality sound system (Bose soundock for ipod, for example), his voice is easily heard and the background noise is easily ignored (or at least not bothersome). Even listening to it on my Sony Vaio computer speakers is fine. THIS AUDIOBOOK, IF YOU LISTEN TO IT AND MAKE EVEN SMALL EFFORTS TO INCORPORATE THE LESSONS, WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE (IF PERFORMED WITH EVEN MINIMAL CONSISTENCY INITIALLY!). You will NOT be disappointed. The concepts are so simple it's scary, but we seem to get so tied up with "busyness" that we don't know what SHOULD be basic knowledge. Try it.

Metaphorically insightful

I love metaphors! I enjoyed the way Hanh used metaphors to relay his thoughts about mindful living. I have started walking meditations and they are an awesome way to enhance your daily life. I agree with others that the sound quality is not very good, and his accent is quite thick. If your attention span is short, this might distract you enough to make this audiobook NOT worth your while. But if you have time to rewind it a few times. .. . . .ENJOY!

Thich Nach Hanh himself

Firstly I love that this is the man himself, I started listening to a narrated version but it's nowhere near as magical. Every word he says is beautiful. Recommending this to all my friends - a lovely book that will encourage you to look at everything with new eyes.

Beautiful, Simple, and Practical

I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. I could feel the joy in Thich Nhat Hanh's voice, and didn't have a problem with his accent as others did. The practices are beautifully simple, yet deeply profound. It's definitely one of those books you can listen to over and over again.

Accessible Meditation

The audio proceeds along a course which is accessible to us regular human beings and stresses simple points. You can do this as a 5 minute break, eating your breakfast, drinking your tea and living in the day to day world. It's wonderful and totally not spooky or off in the ozone. We even bought all the videos available. He is GREAT!

Awe Inspiring

Would you listen to The Art of Mindful Living again? Why?

Yes I listen to this repeatedly. It is a constant, refreshing reminder full of metaphors to teach and remind us of our true beings. He has an amazing way of reminding us and bringing us into nature.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Art of Mindful Living?

Everything.

What does Thich Nhat Hanh bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Very insightful, calming, relaxing to hear him bring me to the presence of nature and just being still and quiet.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from The Art of Mindful Living?

All of it.

Any additional comments?

I am not sure how people do not understand his accent. This book is meant to stop what you are doing and listen...just listen and be.

Beautifully simplistic ...

Any additional comments?

Thich Nhat Hanh's simplistic words guide the reader to the realization of the importance of being mindful in every moment of our lives. Whilst reading I realized I knew this, 'it' was there, within me always but yet failed to see nor practice in daily life. Moment to moment.

The practices are beautifully simple, yet deeply profound. It's definitely one of those books to reach for over and over again. Within the pages there is always something relevant for your inner being.

hard to understand

The author/narrator has many wonderful things to say, but he's very hard to understand. I had to keep rewinding to listen a second and third time.
