Publisher's summary

Be our guest at one of Janet Allen's popular Literacy Institutes, recorded live in Jacksonville, Florida. Thoughtful, amusing, and ever practical, Janet discusses and explores many of difficulties every literacy educator faces daily:

  • Understanding the elements that get in the way of reading success
  • Choosing texts that match the needs and interests of children and adolescents
  • Using the approaches to reading (read aloud, shared, guided, and independent) to build solid reading foundations for all learners
  • Finding specific strategies to overcome challenges to content literacy
  • Developing strategies for effective instruction in vocabulary development
  • Building on the mutual supports of reading and writing to increase language fluency and content knowledge
  • Finding and using appropriate resources for assessment and evaluation that inform classroom instruction
  • Combining all these elements into a comprehensive literacy-based classroom

Each of these elements is supported by published research and writing, as well as Janet's 20 years as a classroom teacher. Her humor will hold your attention, and her vignettes of classroom experiences will resonate with every teacher who has spent days or years trying to help children and adolescents discover literate lives.

Practical strategies that work

This is a very practical book for teachers of all grades who value reading. The production quality is not brilliant because it comes from a live workshop, but there is a lot to be gained from listening to her talk more than once whilst taking notes. Her experience and insights can only help teachers develop their repertoire of teaching strategies. The most important aspects of her talk for me, came in the second half of the talk and touched on how thinking and reading are linked. Her tactics for empowering students to communicate their thoughts are useful in all subject areas. If this had been transcribed and re-read by another person, it would get 5 stars from this audio-reader.

Great message, mediocre recording quality

The recording isn't the best quality from time to time but the message is worth the occasional annoyance.

We need more titles like this.

What a helpful book. I can only hope Audible will obtain more books to assist teachers to help children become book lovers. I also down loaded Choice Words (another great help).

I would love to see Debbie Miller's and Richard Allington's books here too. I also want to see The Responsive Classroom offer some books on Audible.

This book is a great start!

Important Issues Missed Due to Poor Recording

I am a literacy instructor who eagerly downloaded this audiobook. Janet is a wonderful speaker who does an excellent job reminding us teachers of basic principles. This is an excellent AM driving to school listen.
Unfortunately, the audio quality is poor; there are numerous "skips" and slurs throughout-- so many that it is difficult to listen to. The message gets lost. I wish I could get a refund.

Notes

Many of the other audible books I have purchased provide me with a link to the notes the speaker refers to in the text. I wish this book had done that as well.
