Publisher's summary

With more than 15,000 four- and five-star ratings, an average of 35 messages per day, and hundreds of thousands of profile views from interested suitors, Lauren Urasek was dubbed the most sought-after woman in the city by New York magazine. She then started a popular Tumblr detailing her experiences with Prince Charmings (and Not-So-Charmings) and now tells all in a series of frank, funny essays about the ups and downs of dating in the city that never sleeps.

She's run the gamut of the nominally "single and ready to mingle" males of New York City, from dudes who went in for a kiss within the first 10 minutes to one who conducted an impromptu "girlfriend job interview". And in between the horror stories and dating disasters, Lauren shares some real talk about what works - and what doesn't. Urasek's take on love and romance in the age of the right swipe will make anyone who's ever tried Internet dating laugh, cringe, or both.

Lauren's 22 essays are punctuated by cheeky yet informative sidebars on:

  • Red flags you should never ignore
  • Quirky/weird/offbeat ways to find out whether a guy's not right for you
  • The 15 worst usernames
  • A comparison between different online dating services (OKCupid, Tinder, Match, etc.)
  • And much more!

A candid narration of online dating experiences

I loved this book because of Lauren's courage, a no holds barred narrative style on describing her experiences of online dating.

She is very open about herself, and gives an unfiltered view into the dysfunctional male dating behavior.

Inspite of the various challenges in her life, Lauren displays a gritty and tenacious character to build herself from the ground up, and matures into a confident woman who sets expectations, boundaries and challenges societal norms of expectations from a young woman. Lauren has embraced non-conformism and has elevated herself to break outside of the box this patriarchal world forces women into.

While others may only choose to see negativity or anger, I encourage them to look past that. I perceived a sense of individuality, confidence, cynicism, and impassioned authenticity displayed in her story telling which I really appreciated. I definitely have more than a few positive takeaways from this audio book.

My best wishes to Lauren!

Hugely Disappointing

What would have made Popular better?

Poorly organized. No thruline. Material is dated b/c it's about okaycupid which no one uses now. Read like average blog entries from a community college student who's just starting to learn to write. She wants to come across as a humble but instead she comes across as a name dropping social climber who denies how much her good looks play into her story which never would've happened otherwise. No idea how this book got published, at least without a major rewrite.

Would you ever listen to anything by Lauren Urasek and Laura Barcella again?

Never in a million years.

What character would you cut from Popular?

Repeating I'm #1 on okay cupid a zillion times.
