Publisher's summary

In Overcoming Passive-Aggression, Dr. Tim Murphy and Loriann Hoff Oberlin provide an in-depth look at a topic we've all faced but haven't always recognized: Hidden anger.

When people don't express their views and feel compelled to conceal their true beliefs and emotions, behaving in ways that don't match what they honestly think, there can be serious physical and psychological results for everyone involved.

For the first time, Murphy and Oberlin offer a clear definition of passive-aggression and show listeners not only how to end the behavior, but also how to avoid falling victim to other people's hidden anger. In clear, compassionate language, they cover everything from the childhood origins of the condition to the devastating effect it has on work and personal relationships to the latest research on the subject, and offer practical, proven strategies for the angry person as well as the individual who finds himself the target of someone else's passive-aggression.

What did you learn from Overcoming Passive-Aggression, Revised Edition that you would use in your daily life?

Overcoming Passive-Aggression steps listeners/readers through what we too often see as controlling, manipulative, self-absorbed or sometimes lazy or down in the dumps behavior. The book explores where the behaviors come from, how this makes up the passive-aggressive persona, and why it leaves others (bosses, coworkers, significant others) frustrated. Through modern, easy to understand examples we can see the behavior play out and we can also see how to respond to it assertively so that we do not become so angry ourselves. This resources is a must-have for managers. Its multicultural perspectives aid in grasping the concepts that affect people of varying ages, ethnic backgrounds, and positions in life. Overall, very well done.

Just a shallow overview

Compared to what I came to expect from a book about personal growth, this book lacks the depth required to really make a transformation.
You will learn how passive aggression manifest itself in different contexts, such as relationships, divorces, workplace and etc..
It will be described why passive aggression is bad in those contexts and how everyone worse off due this behaviour.
To be honest I already knew all that, that is why i bought the book in the first place. So, beyond some reaffirmation, rehearing it over again throughout the book became tedious and boring.
Absent from the book were touching personal stories of people who act in passive aggression or people who learn to overcome passive aggression or people who successfully dealed with passive aggressive people. Stories that will induce empathy, be memorable, give me a sense of connection to the nerrative and help me truly learn something new or provide me a new perspective.

Not for the person trying to actually OVERCOME

I bought this book after being a doormat for almost 5 decades passive aggression has begun leaking out. I wanted to learn how to OVERCOME this behavior. Besides leaving this book with a self esteem worse than I began I found no real help over coming the anger the built. This book felt more as a book characterizing beliefs from a receipiants point of view of what what going on in the head of the person displaying the transition from years of passivity to the passive aggression. Sadly, I wanted this book to be a real help.

The kitchen sink of mental health issues

This book was not at all what I was looking for. Although it touched on some passive-aggression topics, it was much more of an overview on many mental health topics. And it focused on those providing therapy to patients, not to the layperson wanting to "Stop Hidden Anger from Spoiling Your Relationships, Career, and Happiness". I listened to the whole audiobook hoping it would get better but it did not so I have returned it.
