Publisher's summary

Want to learn a skill, but don't know how to get started? Struggle to find time for a side project? Ever quit in frustration after beginning something new?

We all want to expand on our existing knowledge. But sometimes it's impossible to stay consistent with a new skill or habit. It's easy to fall into the trap where you focus only on learning and never get around to implementing the information.

The truth is: You can learn anything...without spending lots of money...without dedicating thousands of hours to the process...and often without leaving the comfort of your home.

Anyone can develop a talent with the right mix of practice, motivation, and coaching. And that's what you'll learn in Novice to Expert.

Download Novice to Expert: 6 Steps to Learn Anything, Increase Your Knowledge, and Master New Skills.

Written by Wall Street Journal best-selling author SJ Scott, Novice to Expert will show you how to:

  • Set a goal to learn a new skill
  • Fully immerse yourself in this world
  • Meet others who share a similar passion
  • Identify the "right things" to practice daily
  • Master a skill so you can teach others about it

Many people don't believe they can teach themselves. We live in an age of abundant information, yet there is a common myth that the only way to learn is through a formal educational environment or by hiring an expensive coach. That's why you'll discover:

  • Six proven resources to teach yourself a skill
  • The number-one technique for taking actionable notes
  • Thirteen questions to ask yourself before picking a skill
  • Two "must-have" apps to manage a knowledge-based project
  • Eight steps to deliberately practice a new skill
  • Six habit-learning challenges (and how to overcome them)

Quick Plan with In-Depth Resources at the Back End

Where does Novice to Expert rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would rank it high. It brings clear steps, concepts, and tools to make your goal of becoming an expert in anything very practical. It also includes a link to the notes so you don't have to scramble to write down every little link or concept. That feature alone is great for me since I am typically doing chores or driving when listening to audiobooks. The notes alone are gold! They direct you directly to the sources and there is a whole membership site included to further increase your skills. You really can become an expert on the concepts of this book due to his amazing back end training included already. Seriously, S.J. Scott adds on value over abounding value! It really is just a matter of you following the training and being the expert you want to be in whatever field that is. Mine currently is sleep, and I will reflect on what I learned to apply towards that means.

Would you recommend Novice to Expert to your friends? Why or why not?

Most definitely! Many times I tell my friends how I learned this or that, and essentially this book talks about it as well as more sources, processes, and ideas I myself have learned from. It's much quicker just referring this book to them.

What does Greg Zarcone bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I am a slow reader but can understand him at 2X play speed. Clearly, I cannot read while driving, washing the dishes, doing laundry, etc, and Greg allows me to listen to him while doing those very things. In two words, Greg saves me time.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Journey to Expertise.

Any additional comments?

I was given a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for a review. The author told me to put that disclaimer, but I will also say I have purchased some of his books because he truly does provide lots of value and I have always learned from them in my quest to improve my own life.

Great for the absolute novice

This book is for people that need to be told to google to get information
the quote on buffets advice was interesting but otherwise the book is not really a source I would recommend for anyone who has a semblance of common sense

Soooo Good! Here's Why--

I write novels so I have to get good at certain subjects I never would've thought possible (People can spot an idiot 5 pages in). Plus, after study, I have to know whether the idea will even fly.
And I have to do that pretty darned quickly!
As far as self-help books go tho', what works for one person might be old news to another. So here's what's in "Novice to Expert".
The six skills are 1) To identify which of the 7 learning styles you learn best with and how to develop each; 2) Pick a SINGLE skill; 3) Build a Learning Habit (through the top-rated, only the top-rated, books, the best Podcasts, etc.); 4) Take Actionable Notes (it discusses different systems); 5) Creating a Project around the skill (repetition-based skills, or knowledge-based); 6) Deliberately practicing these skills each day (break down to the smallest level of the skill--if it can't be learned after 1-3 tries, break it down to an even smaller level to ultra micro-components).
You'll learn the 6 habit learning challenges and how to solve them. 1) Procrastination/Getting Started (accountability partners plus other things are discussed); 2) Finding the time (disengaging from social media is only one part gone into, 'cause everybody knows THAT one, right?); 3) Sticking with a skill (don't be over ambitious); 4) Inability to stay consistent (finding inspirations in blogs, podcasts, try your hand teaching to someone, etc.); 5) Fear of missing out (outline your top 25 priorities in life, focus on the top five and avoid the others like the PLAGUE); 6) Not receiving support (dismissing negative people from your circle; addressing a partner's concerns by looking for answers and possible solutions from your network, finding options).
Exercises are found throughout the book, there's a website with extra info (sorry, I don't have it on hand) and a PDF with reports to access. Basically, there's a whole heckuva lot here for just over 3 hours.
It was DEFINITELY worth the time, worth the price!
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to become an expert at pigeon racing, and traumatic brain injuries. ...seriously...

A very good book on the steps to get you from a beginner to a master. The narration is great too.
