Publisher's summary

Bringing chivalry back into our modern-day world, this book shows us how to inspire today's generation of young boys to pursue honor, courage, and compassion.

In an age when respect and honor seem like distant and antiquated relics, how can we equip boys to pursue valor and courageously put the needs of others before their own? This book helps parents to inspire their boys by captivating their imagination and honoring their love for adventure. Heather Haupt explores how knights historically lived out various aspects of the knights' Code of Chivalry, as depicted in the French epic Song of Roland, and how boys can embody these same ideals now. When we issue the challenge and give boys the reasons why it is worth pursuing, we step forward on an incredible journey toward raising the kind of boys who, just like the knights of old, make an impact in their world now and for the rest of their lives.

Critic reviews

Knights in Training is a breath of fresh air in today's world. In this must-read book, Heather Haupt provides an inspired and powerful road map for anyone raising boys to be polite, compassionate, honorable gentlemen. Highly recommended!” (Amy McCready, founder of PositiveParentingSolutions.com and author of The “Me, Me, Me” Epidemic: A Step-by-Step Guide to Raising Capable, Grateful Kids in an Over-Entitled World)

"Chivalry does not have to die and civility does not have to be a lost art form, but the only way for these to make a comeback in society is to start in families and at home. Heather Haupt offers fascinating insight into the current state of boyhood and manhood, alongside a practical and fun guide for training our boys in the ways of courage, kindness, and honor. I'm inspired to raise my three boys to be modern-day knights who will love God, respect and serve others, and leave this world a better place than they found it."-(Erin Mohring, co-founder of The MOB Society and Raising Boys Ministries, writer at homewiththeboys.net)

“I often talk with parents about the importance of teaching boys to be gentlemen. Then parents ask me, 'How, exactly do I do that? How do I raise my son to be a gentleman?' From now on, I will know just how to answer. I will tell parents: 'Read Heather Haupt’s book Knights in Training'." (Leonard Sax MD PhD, author of the New York Times best seller The Collapse of Parenting, Why Gender Matters, Boys Adrift, Girls on the Edge)

Boy moms be inspired in a doable way!

From the moment I started listening to this I just wanted to focus solely on it. I kept making bookmarks for my husband to listen to and for me to specifically remember certain bits. I've recommended it to every boy mom I know.
When I started reading this book I went into it with curiosity but feeling that I was reading just another boy mom book. But Heather's voice is just so personable. You can tell that these things she put into practice with her boys built her up instead of wearing her down with more to do. It made me get excited about stepping out in another boy adventure and as a mom with four boys I'm in the thick of it. I wanted to try it all. I kept telling my boys about what I was listening to and what I was excited about putting into practice with them. They would ask everyday if I had finished the knight book yet. We are all excited to start this adventure. It's been a wonderful change for our home... And it's not wearing me out! Thank you Heather.

Modern Knights Rescue Society

Where does Knights in Training rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

While I've listened to well over a hundred audio books, this book is unique, and cannot be compared to most that to which I have listened.

What other book might you compare Knights in Training to and why?

Boys Adrift. Knights in Training identifies many of the problems into which young manhood today has fallen, as does Boys Adrift. However, Knights in Training goes on to suggest a concise plan of action for parents dealing with those challenges.

Have you listened to any of Heather Haupt’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not previously listened to another performance of Heather Haupt. I am not usually in favor of authors reading their own works, as a gifted writer does not necessarily translate into a gifted narrator, but Mrs. Haupt can both write and narrate well, and because of the passion she brings to the topic, she is the ideal narrator for Knights in Training.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reaction. It did make me laugh, having grown up in a family of boys, and now trying to raise a boy.

Any additional comments?

I strongly urge anyone raising boys to listen to or read this book. Most parents do not recognize the degree to which their boys are under fire from several sides. Consequently, boys and young men, and even some older ones, flounder in modern society. Heather advocates a revolution to restore to men, young and old, their societal value and dignity, and their prospects for personal happiness and fulfillment.

Thank you Heather. You have delivered a very timely antidote for some of the very serious ills currently plaguing our nation.

Amazing book for anyone with boys!

This book is amazing. I will definitely listen to it again and refer to it many times for guidance. These tips are what so many boys are missing in their life. I see how this book is going to help me as a mother, a teacher and as a children's minister.

Worth the listen

While I may not follow actual Knight training, this book definitely gave me some great ideas or confirmed my personal teachings with my son. It has helped me change some of the ways I may talk to my son or ask him questions.

Not just for parents of boys!

Even though I have two girls, this was such a great book. While the implementation will look different, many of the principles outlined in this book apply to girls as well as boys. More importantly, it reminded me of some of the aspects of "boyhood" I need to teach my girls about such as allowing a boy to help you. (For an independent minded girl this is the last thing she wants!)

You are either raising modern day knights or the young maidens who will one day marry those knights. Let's raise an honorable generation!

This is a great source of information to help raise honorable young knights in training.

This requires seeing the value in the process of raising honorable young knights. This is a long-term commitment and requires continuous effort but the value is always worth the effort involved especially for the children we love. I appreciate the authors accounts of how this journey went for her. The activities seem to be fun and will give the children an opportunity to become knights and what we would consider honorable young men. I hope that this challenge to throw down the gauntlet and accept the opportunity to give children a knights training is something that people embrace and welcome the opportunity to see why they would want children who are knights.

Fun and interesting

A really good read. The application of the principles of chivalry in raising boys is a brilliant notion. I see this being a great tool to use with son as he's very fond of emulating heroes.

Little boys to knights!

I have been praying for a fun, purposefully way in helping my son learn how to become a gentleman. I have 3 girls as well and this book has great ideas on helping them all to become the best they can in a playful way!
When I have expressed my concerns of raising "good" adults who fill their potential, I have been told to "just let them be kids". This is a great plan to help them rise up and become the person they are meant to be, and even help childhood to even be more magical!
Thank you Heather for sharing! I have shared this book with several friends and we have started using this in our homes and are working together to raise modern day nights.
