Publisher's Summary

Are you looking to enrich a healthy relationship, revitalize a tired one, or rescue one gone awry? We all want a lifetime of love, support, and companionship. But sometimes we need a little help.

Enter Dr. Sue Johnson, developer of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy and "the best couple therapist in the world," according to best-selling relationship expert Dr. John Gottman. In Hold Me Tight, Dr. Johnson shares her groundbreaking and remarkably successful program for creating stronger, more secure relationships.

The message of Hold Me Tight is simple: Forget about learning how to argue better, analyzing your early childhood, making grand romantic gestures, or experimenting with new sexual positions. Instead, get to the emotional underpinnings of your relationship by recognizing that you are emotionally attached to and dependent on your partner in much the same way that a child is on a parent for nurturing, soothing, and protection.

Dr. Johnson teaches that the way to enhance or save a relationship is to be open, attuned, and responsive to each other and to reestablish emotional connection. With this in mind, she focuses on key moments in a relationship - from "Recognizing the Demon Dialogues" to "Forgiving Injuries" - and uses them as touch points for seven healing conversations. These conversations give you insight into the defining moments in your relationship and guide you in reshaping these moments to create a secure and lasting bond.

    "Siri"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Well spent if you can get past the narrator's robot voice....

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Sandra Burr?

Someone with a warmer tone. It felt like I was listening to Siri reading the whole time. You gotta really get past the abrupt reading of the narrator to really listen to the meaning of the book. Doesn't seem like Sandra Burr was using the author's voice. Instead she just sounds like Siri... The author makes a lot of reference to other people's work and it I think the narrator could've done a better job instead of just listing out those references.

Could you see Hold Me Tight being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    No.But possibly a documentary.

This book resanated with me, my wife not so much. She is resistant to facing her past hurts and how they are affecting her today.

    "Very informative. A must read."

Listening to the stories from couples therapy brings back so many memories of where I have fell short in my marriage. But it gives a deeper understanding of why I responded to my wife the way I did and gives a roadmap to building stronger more loving relationship.

"I am a therapist and I expected better."

This book was highly recommended to me by multiple people as a great intro to EFT, in addition to being a great personal tool to explore intimacy with your partner. Most of my score reflects the quality of the recording, which I found very disappointing. It's edited so that the sentences run very closely together, which makes the artist sound clipped and emphasizes her monotone voice quality. This is very distracting and takes away from my ability to concentrate on the content. As far as the content, I really wanted to like the book as I have heard rave reviews about it. However, I find that the proportion of Johnson's self congratulatory rhetoric relative to actual therapeutic content is really imbalanced and distracting. I really wanted more explanations of the ins and outs of intimacy and EFT and how-tos. I'm guessing that the textbook might be a better fit for me as it will need to be less self promoting and more focused on therapeutic material.

"Hard listen. Perhaps a Better Read"

The main problem with this book is the narration. The narrator's voice tended to make imitating the females voice sound meek and quiet while making the male's using a nasally harsh tone. It completely distracted from the book itself. The examples given also seemed to be fake as the conversation had between couples used more technical language which I am sure the average couple would not use. The moral of the book is good but there was a lot going on to distract from that message. I couldn't finish.

"Self reflection a must when you read this!"
Where does Hold Me Tight rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I value the ideas in this book as a parent who believes in attachment parenting so does the premise of the book that we need attachment love in marriage.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Hold Me Tight?

I had several ah ha moments in understanding my marriage struggles.

What does Sandra Burr bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

For me listening to a book with several ideas and conversations to consider was way easier to listen to than to read. It's nice to repeat a part easily and listen over again as I was easily reminded of a concept I may have forgotten.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me do some serious self reflection on how and what I bring to my marriage - both good and not so good. Some great changes were able to be made.

    Any additional comments?

Overall this was very valid information and I appreciate the recommendation from my marriage counsellor to read/listen to this book.

    "Brilliant"
If you could sum up Hold Me Tight in three words, what would they be?

    Helpful, Insightful, Brilliant

What other book might you compare Hold Me Tight to and why?

The 5 love languages, all work by John Gottman

    Which scene was your favorite?

    The whole book was fantastic.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from Hold Me Tight?

Ask for what I need and learn the same from my partner.

"Heartstrings; Attachment feelings, fears and needs"

I believe this work is at the heart of relational issues, both with one's self and others.
It was nice to learn that needs are ok and are a healthy part of being whole and honest.
I have always been hopeful to have healing take place in my relationships. This book teaches me how.

    "The book is great."
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Sandra Burr?

Sue Johnson's book is excellent. The narration is difficult to listen to and feels monotonous. It was all I could do to finish listening to the book. It is best listened to in short increments.

    "Worthwhile content; Spoilt by narrator"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I think the content of the book is very good and I would really love to be able to listen to it but I cannot abide the narrator when she mimics the male voices in the case studies! Otherwise she is a good narrator, but why on earth does she try to sound like a man....I just can't listen to it.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Sorry, I never reached the end!

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Sandra Burr?

Sandra Burr is a good narrator - if only she had read the case studies in her natural voice, I would have had no problem with her narration.

Did Hold Me Tight inspire you to do anything?

This book came highly recommended, as the author is noteworthy in her field. Therefore, I may well persevere with the annoyances I find with the narration, just to find out if I can apply anything to my own situation. I haven't listened to the book for several months now and can only do so in short bursts.

    Any additional comments?

I would strongly suggest rerecording this book, possibly with the same narrator, but definitely without the fake male voices... please!

Its hard to get past the intro, this 'performance' sounds so bad. This woman sounds like a robot.
