Publisher's Summary

Healing the Shame That Binds You is the most enduring work of family relationship expert and New York Times best-selling author John Bradshaw. In it, he shows how unhealthy toxic shame, often learned young and maintained into adulthood, is the core component in our compulsions, co-dependencies, addictions and drive to superachieve. While positive shame empowers us and sustains the fabric of our social system, inappropriate or misdirected shame results in the breakdown of our self-esteem, the destruction of the family system, and an inability to move forward with our lives. In an honest and emotionally revealing style based largely on his personal experience with addiction and his decades as a counselor, John Bradshaw moves from the source and manifestation of toxic shame to the practical tools---affirmations, visualizations, inner voice and feeling work, guided meditations, and other healing techniques---that will release the shame that binds us to our past.

"I thought it was worth my time"
Would you listen to Healing the Shame that Binds You again? Why?

I am , it's difficult to follow everything so I'm listening to it again.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Healing the Shame that Binds You?

    .

Which character – as performed by John Pruden – was your favorite?

It's not that type of book - this is a textbook really

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

I am able to identify where I have carried shame in my own life.

    Any additional comments?

Again, this is pretty much a text book. Don't expect it to roll like the catcher in the rye. There are parts that won't apply to you but the parts that do may make it all worth it.

"Valuable information, but gruesome at times"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

There were more very extreme gruesome examples than necessary, which seemed more harmful than informative at times. These examples were honestly haunting and did not have enough resolution or education information attached to them to be helpful/informative.

Would you recommend Healing the Shame That Binds You to your friends? Why or why not?

I think the book might actually be re-traumatizing for many survivors. This is really unfortunate, as there is some very good information that otherwise could be helpful.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    Absolutely not.

    "Not so great"

The first half is utterly boring. The second half is alright, but just with few good moments for its length. The audiobook points you to graphs even though you may be listening to it in your car. It is also a bit too religious for my taste.

    "Must have book, deep read"

This book was suggested by my therapist. It's pretty deep and heady. At times I wished the author would speak more to the regular fellow vs the psychologist, but still a great read.

"Some parts are great, but I had to skip others"

The prologue was long and I almost stopped listening. Finally, there were some great pearls of wisdom. I really enjoyed and learned a lot. And then the final chapters talked so much about spirituality and higher powers, so I skipped that too. But the meat of the book, the parts about shame and childhood were enlightening.

    "A Genuinely Enlightening Experience"

Bradshaw combines his many experiences and knowledge into a real, raw and gut churning adventure into oneself. I became aware of parts of me I hadn't noticed before but recognised instantly. The way Bradshaw identifies the spiritual malady is excruciatingly accurate and painful, I felt forced to stop listening on many occasions so that I could process the information and come to terms with the newly discovered parts of myself.
The good news is that the second half of the book is all about solutions and healing. It's worth persevering, I thank myself for doing so.
To summarise, Bradshaw beat the crap out of me emotionally by waking me up to my inner shame and then taught me how to heal my psychological wounds.
I now have the confidence to look forward to enjoying my life by using the techniques provided in this book.
    Thank you John Bradshaw RIP

    "A book of wisdom"

John Bradshaw'd book is immense in its scope and depth, covering so many angles and facets relating to healthy shame and toxic shame. There is a gem on every page and anyone would benefit from listening to this.

My only comment is John narrates the book at a very fast pace and with little intonation, so I needed to stop/rewind very often to absorb the information.

    "Here's to a rebirth"

Great book! It really helped put a lot of things I've been struggling with into perspective; give definitions to things I was dealing with.

The one problem I had was with the use of pronouns: instead of the use of 'they', 'he' and 'she' were used in the perpetuated gender roles within society.

    "Excellent Resource"

I have recommended the text version of this book to clients for many years. It was good to revisit some of the thoughts, theories, ideas put forward and the exercises. The author offers a vast array of research to underpin his approach, however, I did find the reliance (perhaps more the presentation) on others research took away from the author's own extensive knowledge in this area.
