Publisher's summary

Healing the Shame That Binds You is the most enduring work of family relationship expert and New York Times best-selling author John Bradshaw. In it, he shows how unhealthy toxic shame, often learned young and maintained into adulthood, is the core component in our compulsions, co-dependencies, addictions and drive to superachieve. While positive shame empowers us and sustains the fabric of our social system, inappropriate or misdirected shame results in the breakdown of our self-esteem, the destruction of the family system, and an inability to move forward with our lives. In an honest and emotionally revealing style based largely on his personal experience with addiction and his decades as a counselor, John Bradshaw moves from the source and manifestation of toxic shame to the practical tools---affirmations, visualizations, inner voice and feeling work, guided meditations, and other healing techniques---that will release the shame that binds us to our past.

Like a candle piercing the darkness..

This books should be renamed SHADOW PIERCER. It helps (I listen it when ever the shadows get too anonymous) me name my demons and welcome them with open arms like teachers from the beyond. Thank you Bradshaw and audible for bringing this to me...

Loved the in depth analysis on shame, definitely learned things about myself. Best book I've listened to in awhile.

Enlightening and useful

The first half of the book was very detailed on defining a lot of the topics that the book covered. The second half puts them into action. I really liked Chapter 14 the most (the audio chapter not the actual book chapter, which was 8 or 9).

Very valuable

This is a valuable book; I recommend to buy also the paper version to have the meditation written down, and then record them in your own voice.

Identify the Shameful

Bradshaw gives a detailed analysis of where shame comes from and how it can get stuck inside of you. He then goes on to suggest how to go about ridding it and deepening your sense of self hood through finally finding God or a higher power. I'd rather he kept God out of it bc it seems like a crutch when real people need real help and answers. My only concern, but otherwise a great read.
