some good tips for public speaking

This was an interesting and useful book of tips for giving better speeches. The thing I enjoyed most was that the author gave specific examples of noteworthy speeches. I didn't have the opportunity to take courses in rhetoric or argumentation/persuasion when I was at university, so I'm very open to hearing about examples that represent best practice. in speechmaking.

I have purely subjective reasons for deducting stars for the content. For example, one of his key tips is brevity. Yet the author prefaced one of his first examples as being a lengthy speech that contradicts his recommendation. The main reason for my lower rating, though is the examples he used to support his points. It made me wonder who the audience is for this book and why he chose particular examples. For instance, when speaking of the power of repetition, he used a good example of a MLK speech. But then he diverged to marketing slogans and then sermonized about the evils of video games. Yes, I specifically chose the word 'sermonized' because I know so many video gamers and can confirm that they're not budding mass murderers, yet he seems to want to demonize video games. I found my reaction to be interesting, because one of his tips is to use emotion for impact, but I found that his video game example was so off-putting that I became emotionally disengaged from the concept he was trying to communicate. He also discussed the Lewinsky-Clinton cigar example, and then described in detail a legal case he was arguing, where he used visual props but apparently the judge thought the prosecutor was a hot chick, so his client lost the case. This was after he explained the example of the ancient advocate who bared his female clients' breasts to persuade the all-male jury to acquit her (her perfect and perky breasts were visual props, apparently). And so, I don't dispute the tips and guidelines that he presented as methods for improving speeches/public speaking. It's just that his examples didn't resonate emotionally with me, and instead I found myself having the opposite emotional reaction to his words than perhaps he was intending. I"m not a prude by any means (it just sounds like I am!), it's just that I suspect that his intended audience is white male baby boomers (or the male cast of Mad Men). I see that this book has received largely 5-star reviews, so my two cents are subjective.

The narration was quite good, no complaints whatsoever about the speaker!

Teaches how to really close any deal using emotion

The real keys of persuasion are delivered clearly and directly, using very colorful examples. Key concepts like primacy/recency are explained along with exactly how to use them.

This is a how to book based on real life experiences, and gets right to the point with no fluff or filler.

It is worth three times the price, because you can learn in short order how to use the audiences emotion to make the sale, or to get them to take the action you want. The historical examples are right on point. Anyone in business who wants to do a presentation that the audience will remember and act on, needs to buy and absorb the data in this book.

It was so impressive, I sent one to each of my adult children, as I believe the knowledge in the book will help them get what they want, and knowledge that will help you get what you want, is the kind of knowledge truly worth having.
