Great book for empathy

Really helps me stay calm and centered, and feel calm in my life, as opposed to maybe feeling overwhelmed and anxious!

One of my favorite books; it got me through a really hard time in my life

I recommend reading EVERY book by Judith Orloff - I even watched YouTube videos of her… anything I could find.

Judith is such an open-minded person and so likable that it’s very easy to connect with her. I’ve even tried to attend retreats I found on her website, but due to Covid they were only having online seminars, etc.

I don’t know how I stumbled across this book, but it truly changed my life and my understanding of myself and others. I was temporarily living with my parents at the time, and they (my father in particular) can be VERY hard to live with. I grew up with a lot of yelling in the household, literally every single day. There was no physical abuse; I thought we were a perfectly normal family.

I had never heard of an “empath” before, although I always knew I was empathetic (not the same thing). This book helped me to understand what kind of an empath I am and how to cope in uncomfortable situations. Perhaps more importantly, it helped me to understand others, especially “emotional vampires” like my father. By understanding him, I was able to sympathize with him and to stay calm when his temper came out.

I re-read this book (sometimes just certain chapters) often to help me cope with family, friends, coworkers and society in general. I am still socially awkward, and my entire family (parents + 2 siblings who are 11 and 15 years older than me) always have and always will call me “too emotional.”

I ALWAYS hated being called too emotional; it made me really angry as well as giving me the feeling something was wrong with me. Judith Orloff explains how emotional people are necessary in this world and valuable in countless ways. Thanks to this book I am no longer ashamed of myself as a sensitive and emotional person; I embrace it.

This is a MUST-READ for anyone and everyone!

[NOTE: I accidentally wrote this exact review for a different book by Judith Orloff: “The Empath’s Survival Guide.”]

Peaceful Delivery

The information and narrator were good for this type of book. Everything was presented in orderly fashion, easily understandable, and thorough. Worth the second listen to to absorb specific parts bookmarked.

Very Insightful

No book ever has it 100% but this book certainly is extremely helpful. I find it very good that the author uses herself as an example so many times, proving to me that she is not just saying things, she actually relates. Her stance on spirituality seems very open and I like that, to me, this is as it should be. With an open mind anyone can find help in this book.

Love the book and love the narrator

I highly recommend this book! I learned so much and Judith was so vulnerable with sharing her story and with the desire to help others. I have not resonated with a teacher/speaker/spiritual inspiration as I have with her. This is the 2nd book I got and plan on getting another one by her. The narrator was awesome! Spoke so eloquently and made the words stand out.

Amazing Read!

2nd time I have read this book, first time in hardback, audio is the way to go! The author is amazing, she really has some valuable "emotional action steps" that have changed my life, helped me understand all aspects of my emotions and how to overcome negative emotions and replace them with love and compassion!

Insightful book

I love the overall message of the book. I needed to hear this. I’m glad I listened to it, but by the end, I have to admit, I was feeling a bit of information overload. There is a lot of repetition in this book, so it isn’t always easy to stay engaged. I would suggest buying this book and listening to the chapters you most need to hear – whether you are dealing with depression or constant frustration or anxiety or whatever. Listen to what you really need to hear right now, and save the rest for a later time. Focus on applying that one chapter to your life. It’ll be easier to absorb the information that way.

It's a little boring.

I do not like that this psychologist. She talks too much about herself; also, talks too much about unimportant things. Some of the things that she talks about are nice and help me with my problems, although it would have been better if she would not talk so much about uninteresting things such her dreams and self imagined abilities to read people's minds and dreams. Also, I do not like her voice, it's hard to understand.
