“I believe in you. You have a great destiny. You are meant for great things. And it’s possible to live a wonderful, extraordinary life.” That is the promise offered by best-selling author and illustrator James A. Owen in this remarkable and inspirational meditation.
In Drawing Out the Dragons, James shares personal stories and the deep truths he learned while navigating past obstacles and adversity toward a life of lasting belief and joy. We all have a grand destiny, but sometimes we feel we lack the power to achieve it. But we always have the power to choose. “Every drawing, every life, is nothing but a series of choices and actions. Make your lines. Make your choices. . . . What you create from there is entirely up to you.” Drawing Out the Dragons has the power to uplift, inspire, and change your life. Motivational and inspirational, this book is ideal for graduates, dreamers, or anyone making life’s most important choices.
This is the best book I've read on how to live one's creative dream out in life. It is heartwarming, clear, and will motivate you to help yourself and others in fulfilling your creative dream. Serendipity, or the magical extra thing that pops up when we are devoted to our creative tasks with full commitment, is a magical extra you will encounter as you go to meet your dragons. I would encourage you to step up and ask for what you want, and then listen to the answer on how to get it, as James A. Owen will tell you simply how to both draw a line, and decide where you put it, and similarly in your life, to decide what you must do the most and then do it. Failure to do what we are gifted to do is a great loss. Go for it.
It's great to hear such inspirational words from some who was in the mud, but didn't have the training and experience that most self help authors have. You are a guy who figured it out the hard way not a train psychologist that has real life experience to draw from. You make me believe anyone can do it. Thanx for this and all you other work too.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I didn't listen to it in one sitting...but nearly so.
Any additional comments?
Drawing out the Dragons is an inspirational story - I like how if you put your head down you can find a way to make anything work. It's a great message, and I'm glad that James Owen shares his stories to kids at a time when it'll do them the most good. Well worth a read or listen.
This is one of the only books I keep on my phone at all times for an emotional pick-me-up when times get rough and the choices feel overwhelming. It represents the culmination of a life that has inspired my own choices. The odd part is that, though culmination is the best word I can think of to describe the work, it does not feel like an end, as the word culmination implies. It is only the beginning. For you, for me, for the author. For all of us.
Would you listen to Drawing Out the Dragons again? Why?
Definitely. There's just something about hearing the author read his own words - it means more, I think.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Drawing Out the Dragons?
SPOILER! When James crushes his drawing hand in a car accident, I was (and still am) so inspired by what he chooses to do, even though everyone else tells him it's not possible.
What did you learn from Drawing Out the Dragons that you would use in your daily life?
This is such an inspiring book from front to back. Sometimes we forget to believe in ourselves. We forget the potential we have to follow our passions. This is a timely, perfect reminder. I'll be listening to this for many years to come.
