Most of us envy the drive and determination of these people. They’ve actually made this stuff happen rather than just day-dreamed about it.
We all ask...Could I Do That? Well Simon Hartley is here to show us that we can! Taking on a challenge - big or small - in your career or personal life, can be intimidating but also totally transformational. Simon will show us how to work out what it is we want to do and then how to make that happen. He uses examples and advice from others who have achieved big things. The book examines how you should go about preparing for change, which problems you’ll face along the way, and demonstrates why and how your life will be better as a consequence. Practical and motivational, it’s about embracing change and defeating limiting beliefs.
Could I Do That? challenges listeners to think big and take steps to achieving their goals by putting power in the hands of people who don’t yet realise that they can do extraordinary things, too.

Would you listen to Could I Do That? again? Why?
Yes, I have listened to this book 3 times. I find the central question 'Could I Do That?' extremely powerful as it provokes one to overlook limiting beliefs - which are the main obstacles we face on the path to success - and instead focus on the limitless possibilities and abundance of resources available to us. If we look at successful role models, it is clear that they don't have super-natural powers - they simply focus on the building blocks, as Simon puts it, persistently taking small daily actions and towards reaching goals. The question also encourages us to look at the many examples of people who have overcome significant challenges and adversity to attain almost unimaginable achievements.
Confidence is described by Simon as having the mental capacity to use the ability that was already there – and this is something I can relate to. The concept draws on several philosophies, one being the power of having faith: detailed in Think And Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill as being one of the fundamental underpinnings of success. One fitting example of confidence being Roger Bannister who paved the way for thousands to run a ‘4-mintue mile’.
The concept that if we don’t know that something is impossible, we will carry on like it is possible as highlighted by Simon is key and has been the source of innumerable successes throughout history. I found this particularly interesting as taking such a stance encourages us to be more creative and look for solutions rather than reasons why something won’t work. Further, Simon goes into detail about persisting and how one should be willing to make mistakes and failures and learn from them. This is a fundamental pillar of success and I obtained some good insights from Simon on this topic.
I also found the discussion of successful people having eccentric qualities and abnormal routines very interesting as I can relate to being willing to do what others aren’t to achieve ambitious goals.
What did you like best about this story?
The story itself was one of the most compelling aspects of the book – being avidly into health and fitness myself there is a lot that resonated with me but not just in terms of physical challenges: more-so in relation to personal and business situations. Simon highlights that when faced with challenges, the easiest decision might be to keep going through the pain and save face by ‘digging deep’ and powering through. At other times however, the easiest decision may not be the best decision and we should take into consideration the opinions of those closest to us who know us best.
Simon describes his rigorous schedule which includes running a half-marathon before stepping into the office and impressive accomplishments such as completing ironman and multiple ultra-marathons following a severe back injury. At first glace by outsiders, such accomplishments may sound ‘mental’ (as Simon puts it), however he is also keen to point out that in many aspects, he is just a regular guy who simply focuses on a desired outcome and gradually moves toward it at a sustainable pace – a practice we can all apply to become more successful.
What does Glen McCready bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
As an avid listener of audiobooks, my usual preference is to listen to narration directly from the author as it makes me feel more engaged - however Glen McCready’s narration is excellent and a perfect fit for this book. The narrator’s animation, tone and the fact that he is well-spoken really brings the book life. Some narrators can sound very boring and monotonous with little tone variation - Glen McCready made for a very pleasurable and entertaining listen.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
The first two times I listened to this audiobook over a period of one week though recently I got through the book from beginning to end in a single day aided by the fact that it is a very entertaining and inquisitive listen.

Overall a very inspirational, entertaining and thought-provoking book – if others can accomplish demanding feats – so can you! If you are curious about becoming successful, living a more fulfilled life and turning your dreams into reality then I would thoroughly recommend this book!
