An Unparalleled Training in Mindfulness with Thich Nhat Hanh

When your body and mind work together as one, you are fully and naturally present in the moment. This is the essence of mindfulness practice - allowing us to touch the wonders of life in the here and now. Body and Mind Are One is at once a practical teaching series covering fundamental Buddhist principles for a joyful life and a living transmission of insight from beloved Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, who has practiced, shared, and lived this profound wisdom for over seven decades.

Your Breath: The Bridge between Mind and Body

In our hectic modern world, many of us race from one to-do to the next, planning this and worrying about that. Thoughts and unconscious habits often consume us, numbing us to our true experience and to the suffering we create for ourselves and those around us. The Buddha taught how to break this cycle and come home to our bodies - and to the wonders of life found only in the present moment. Your breath is the key. On Body and Mind Are One, Thich Nhat Hanh teaches you the Buddha's exercises for using your breath to cease internal conflict, release tension and anxiety, and become aware of the conditions for happiness and freedom that are always available.

"Through mindfulness," teaches Thich Nhat Hanh, "we can recognize the miracle of being alive, and that is the greatest of all miracles." Experience the wise and healing presence of this unsurpassed teacher, as breath by breath, you follow his simple guidance into what he calls "the Pure Land of the Buddha, the Kingdom of God, in the here and the now."

Highlights:

  • The life-changing energies of mindfulness, concentration, and insight
  • Your presence, the greatest gift you can offer the world
  • Being there: the first aim of meditation
  • The meaning of emptiness, impermanence, and interbeing
  • Touching the Buddha within you

  • Karma as actions of thought, speech, and body
  • The Buddha's exercises for mindful breathing
  • How to nourish the seeds of compassion and lovingkindness within you
  • The Five Mindfulness Trainings as concrete guidelines for reducing suffering and increasing our happiness and true freedom

What a tremendous book!

This audible book is absolutely beautiful. Thigh Nhat Hanh's gentle yet deep descriptions were so beneficial.

Great intro to meditation.

Good for beginners and advanced, too. Thay's voice is incredibly soothing. I listened to the book every day to rest and find more energy. I emerged refreshed and centered.

Great material but audio is very low

Great material but Thich is very soft-spoken and the audio sounds like it was recorded from 20 feet away. It is listenable but don't try to do it anywhere there is any background noise.

👍Mindfulness 🙏

This is a fantastic talk however the audio recording isn't the best. It is a public talk so the audio isn't crisp & you can hear people coughing & sneezing & whatnot throughout the program. Also I think I hear air conditioning or some other form of white noise. Thich Nhat Hanh has wonderful points & give great instruction however his native tongue isn't English so sometimes I had difficulty understanding him. There is one particular word that he repeated but for the life of me I couldn't figure out what he is saying. Finally I feel that due to the audio quality this program is very much over priced & I feel it would be more fair to sell it at half the cost $14.99 USD. But even with the cons if you enjoy Thich Nhat Hanh or need to learn about mastering mindfulness I will still highly recommend this program.

Hard to understand

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The narrator was extremely difficult to understand and the recording quality was horrible. Sounds like it was recorded in an auditorium in front of live audience.

What did you like best about this story?

Content was pretty good--what I could understand.

What didn’t you like about Thich Nhat Hanh’s performance?

Thick accent and poor sound quality ruined the performance.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Upset that is wasn't recorded better.

Any additional comments?

I'm very surprised audible would let such a poor recording be offered on their site.

This has become the most important book in my life

I’ll confess that I use this mostly for getting to sleep on troubled nights or when I’m wound up. But I also listen and practice the meditations and I love the gatthas he suggests. He takes you to a world apart, where materialism and deadlines and other pressures disappear. We contemplate being and non being and the gatthas transport me to a place of peace and serenity. This is a philosophy that can appeal to people of all faiths. His voice is mesmerizing. I cherish this recording and listen many times every week. It was a godsend in my divorce and continues to be a source of inspiration, strength, and joy.

Pleasant, simple .. Buddhism lite

It's a recording of talks given at a retreat, not a real book. He has a comforting voice, a loving audience, and a very simple and reassuring message. Be in the present. Breathe in. Breathe out...

I had trouble with some of his assertions though such as your parents live in every cell so therefore you can communicate with them. That the spirit of ancestors is passed on in a musical way. That there obviously can be no darkness without light. That if you know the Holy Spirit you know the Trinity, if you know the Sangha you must know the Buddha and Dharma.

A nod to science and right into imagination. I have no reason to doubt his sincerity or good intentions but this is not deep Buddhism.
