Publisher's Summary

We all pray... some.

We pray to stay sober, centered, or solvent. When the lump is deemed malignant. When the money runs out before the month does. When the marriage is falling apart. We pray.

But wouldn't we like to pray more? Better? Stronger? With more fire, faith, and fervency?

Yet we have kids to feed, bills to pay, deadlines to meet. The calendar pounces on our good intentions like a tiger on a rabbit. And what about our checkered history with prayer? Uncertain words. Unmet expectations. Unanswered requests.

We aren't the first to struggle with prayer. The first followers of Jesus needed prayer guidance too. In fact, prayer is the only tutorial they ever requested.

And Jesus gave them a prayer. Not a lecture on prayer. Not the doctrine of prayer. He gave them a quotable, repeatable, portable prayer. Couldn't we use the same?

In Before Amen best-selling author Max Lucado joins listeners on a journey to the very heart of biblical prayer, offering hope for doubts and confidence even for prayer wimps. Distilling prayers in the Bible down to one pocket-sized prayer, Max reminds listeners that prayer is not a privilege for the pious nor the art of a chosen few. Prayer is simply a heartfelt conversation between God and his child. Let the conversation begin.

He's Your Father, Simply Talk to Him!

What made the experience of listening to Before Amen the most enjoyable?

Before Amen is down to earth and easy listening! Who would have thought Max Lucado ever had any difficulty praying? So many times I have listened to others pray and remember thinking how eloquent and seamless their words were; and, I wondered how I came across...However, it does not matter! Whether I am praying in a group, public, or alone in my room, the state of my heart is the issue. Are my words true, do I have a relationship with my Lord that is meaningful and real? That is the question and the answer!!!

What does Ben Holland bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I found Ben Holland's reading of the story to be enthusiastic and quite appropriate for Before Amen! His voice made me smile, think, and recall some of my own stories in all the right places!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When I heard the simple prayer...I wish I had known it the first time I was asked to pray as a young teenager at camp in the presence of teens I did not know...

Another home run for Lucado!

Always love Max Lucado's books, and this one is no exception. I am always amazed at his ability to tell a story, give an example, and get a point across that leaves you wanting more. What a blessing his books are. For many years he has been my favorite Christian writer. Ben Holland does an excellent job in doing the audio. His voice is easy to listen to and seems to fit extremely well with Max Lucado's style.

Another winner

Although I know that conversation with God is prayer, Max makes you think. His writing is so easy and understandable while at the same time deep. I liked the approach of the Pilot Prayer. Also the thank you list.
Would recommend this book. The narrator reminds me of Max.

A simple but powerful guide to prayer

We go overboard at times, trying to somehow impress God with all the clever ways we can think of to ask what are ultimately the simplest of requests: help me, help them. We forget gratitude, we forget love, we forget to be in awe of the sacrifice Christ made for us. But our prayers can be as simple and sweet as just calling to God, saying thank you, saying "I love you," and asking plainly for what we want and need.

This book presents a simple but powerful guide to daily prayer, and makes it something elegant and beautiful. I'm a fan of Max Lucado's work, and I value his wisdom and insights, and this is one of the finer books he's written. I highly recommend it to the hurting and the lonely, the happy and joyful as well.

Down to earth

This book more than met my expectations . It made me happy to know that my prayers don't have to be eloquent . There are so many great illustrations that make his ideas real and I love the way he explains Abba. I like to hear this book as I doze off to sleep . It's a comfort to my heart, soul and spirit. Thanks, Max

Just what I needed.

This was my first book to listen to or read by Max Lucado. I am an instant fan. Prayer is explained as simple and broken down for you. He is funny, open and real. How he describes himself and his prayer life was so relatable to me. I highly recommend this book to anyone who struggles in their prayer life. Great examples and tools are given to help you go forward and look at prayer in a whole new way.

A Max-like narrator

Outstanding performance! Ben captured Max's wit and passion. In a previous Lucido book, I had to exert my best efforts to focus ON the message and OFF the voice of the narrator, who seemed far more determined to demonstrate that he could enunciate and keep a professional tone than on the humanity of the message.
Great job! Great book!
