Publisher's summary

Leading Harvard Medical School expert and "obesity warrior" (Time magazine) rewrites the rules on weight loss, diet, and health.

Forget everything you've been taught about dieting. In Always Hungry?, renowned endocrinologist Dr. David Ludwig explains why traditional diets don't work and presents a radical new plan to help you lose weight without hunger, improve your health, and feel great.

For over two decades, Dr. Ludwig has been at the forefront of research into weight control. His groundbreaking studies show that overeating doesn't make you fat; the process of getting fat makes you overeat. That's because fat cells play a key role in determining how much weight you gain or lose. Low-fat diets work against you by triggering fat cells to hoard more calories for themselves, leaving too few for the rest of the body. This "hungry fat" sets off a dangerous chain reaction that leaves you feeling ravenous as your metabolism slows down. Cutting calories only makes the situation worse - creating a battle between mind and metabolism that we're destined to lose. You gain more weight even as you struggle to eat less food.

Always Hungry? turns dieting on its head with a three-phase program that ignores calories and targets fat cells directly. The recipes and meal plan include luscious high-fat foods (like nuts and nut butters, full-fat dairy, avocados, and dark chocolate), savory proteins, and natural carbohydrates. The result? Fat cells release their excess calories, and you lose weight - and inches - without battling cravings and constant hunger. This is dieting without deprivation.

Forget calories. Forget cravings. Forget dieting. Always hungry? reveals a liberating new way to tame hunger and lose weight...for good.

Critic reviews

"David Ludwig is one of the very few voices of true authority in the world of obesity. This book goes to the heart of the underlying cause of our obesity crisis based on the emerging science of satiety and how it controls our hunger. More importantly, this book offers a practical, lifetime approach to return to a state of improved wellness regardless of your weight." (Barry Sears)
"Dr. David Ludwig is the leading researcher and voice in our food and nutrition revolution. His focused, incisive, impeccable and irrefutable research has broken the code on why we are facing an overwhelming epidemic of obesity and chronic disease. His voice needs to be heard by all, and heeded by all." (Mark Hyman)

Redundant narrative

The narrative in this book was very redundant (it could be condensed into 1 chapter) and the quotes from previous patients were for the most part unnecessary. The weight loss on many patients was not impressive and they even said they never did a control group in the study.

We'll see if the supplemental information is worth it.

Recipes?

I liked the concepts presented, but no access to recipes is disappointing. Do I have to buy a paper copy to get them?

Great book with one horrible and one good narrator

What made the experience of listening to Always Hungry? the most enjoyable?

The book is filled with new insights to nutrition, and how the food we choose affects our body. However, the testimonials that seem to take up about 50% of the book are excessive, annoying, and endless.

What didn’t you like about David Ludwig’s performance?

David Ludwig's narration was fine. It was nice to hear the author in his own voice. Even though he's not a professional, he did a good job.
The OTHER narrator, though, the one who reads the testimonials, is like fingernails on a chalkboard. She over-emotes every word, and reads every quote in the exact same infomercial voice. I'd pay extra for a version without any of her interruptions.

Any additional comments?

Please, please, please release a version without the testimonials.

Yes, I was always hungry and now I know why!

It's one thing for a doctor researching the topic of carbs, fat and protein to know his stuff, but it's another to have it relayed to the lay person in an interesting and understandable way. Always Hungry is extremely approachable. I have always wondered how to sift through the plethora of diet philosophies and make a decision on which is "right"for me. Well, after listening to this book I can see why there is so much confusion and why our nation is full of overweight people who for the large part (no pun intended), fail at dieting attempts. The amount of false information circulating about fats and carbohydrates is truly mind boggling and now, after reading Dr. Ludwig's book, I have a very clear idea on where I have gone wrong and how to correct it. I think this is a fantastic book and I find the author's voice to be friendly, caring and knowledgable. I cannot wait to reset my fat cells and increase my metabolism and feel better than ever. I feel confident that after applying the concepts in this book I will have success. For the first time ever, I understand how to look at food and forecast what effects it will have on my body.

Can't keep listening

While the information in this book is interesting, I can't keep listening because the narrator is awful. The underlying tone of the book feels like a sales pitch for another diet fad. Disappointing.

Metabolism For Beginners

A somewhat lame variation on Haley Pomeroy's Fast Metabolism Diet. The endless "My Always Hungry Story" testimonials were far more distracting than encouraging. I have already lost over 15% of my start weight and kept it off, so this beginner's guide to human metabolism is going back. Not for me, perhaps useful to someone new to the topic.

Pretty typical fad diet book

Would you try another book from David Ludwig and/or David Ludwig?

Probably not.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The primary narrator was fine; but the continual interruptions for "My Always Hungry Story" were obnoxious.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment. I had expected a book about nutrition science, and instead got a pretty standard fad diet book.

A Practicing Neurologist's perspective is Valuable

If you could sum up Always Hungry? in three words, what would they be?

Diets Missing Fat

What did you like best about this story?

I learned that fat in my diet is healthy and important. It's really carbohydrates that signal insulin to fat cells, to" store," instead of "use" its fat reserves. Also, be conscious when choosing to include highly processed carbohydrates. Some people are sensitive to them. Can cause inflammation all over the body from the brain fog to the swollen joints, autoimmune issues, and more. They can interfere with sleep, energy, or trigger cravings. Some people are hyper sensitive to Carbs and and should not add them back to their diet. I like Dr Ludwig's personal approach.

What does David Ludwig bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Doctor Ludwig brings his own calm voice with practical guidance in practical steps. There is an add'l woman narrator reading written testimonials from Dr Ludwig's patients interspersed in the book that are reassuring.

What did you learn from Always Hungry? that you would use in your daily life?

I now know the proper proportion of Fat, Protein and Carbohydrates in my meals for good health. Also to pay attention to not just the scale, but sleep, energy level, hunger level. Guidelines for training wheels, then transitioning to putting together my own healthy meals with the foods we enjoy. I love some of the recipes I've tried, and haven't even tried them all yet. Great ideas for make ahead sauces, dips and dressings to get the needed fat in a meal, and what delicious flavor boosts they give. Great tips for quick to put together meals. He comments that he used a dietician and a culinary chef to put together his meal combinations. I can believe that. Delicious.

Any additional comments?

The information is Important, refreshing, and feels balanced. I am free from counting calories.

Always Hungary

Interesting book. However the always hungry stories became irritating after a while! Reduced it to another How to lose weight book, rather than being educational and informative. Didn't help that all of these stories were read by a woman! Huge promises are made for eating quality foods and weight loss, great if this works!!
