Story
When Augustine handed over the leadership of his church in AD 426, his successor was so overwhelmed by a sense of inadequacy that he declared, "The swan is silent", fearing the spiritual giant's voice would be lost in time. But for 1,600 years Augustine has not been silent - and neither have the men who faithfully trumpeted the cause of Christ after him. Their lives have inspired every generation of believers and should compel us to a greater passion for God.

John Newton, Charles Simeon, and William Wilberforce suffered lifelong opposition and endured for the causes of gospel truth, missionary zeal, and political justice. They found, in solid doctrine and humble joy, the tough roots for habitual tenderness in response to their adversaries - without doctrinal or moral flinching. They are examples of remarkable grace. In the third book of the Swans Are Not Silent series, best-selling author John Piper looks at the lives of these three great men and how they not only endured great opposition but did so with joy and without bitterness.

Can an ethnocentric Jew write the most beautiful call to reconciliation? Can a person who lives with the unceasing anguish of empathy be always rejoicing? Can a man's description of the horrors of human sin be exceeded by his delight in human splendor? Can a man with a backbone of steel be as tender as a nursing mother?

The things that make God glad are the measures of His greatness. Christ and the cross. Choosing His people and bruising His Son. Creating the world and revealing His worth. Love is at the heart of the Bible. From the moment Adam declared Eve “flesh of my flesh”…to the sacrificial love of Joseph for Mary…to the deep friendship of David and Jonathan…to the abounding and never-changing love of God: The Bible is a love story. But it also redefines the way the world tells us we should think about love. The Bible reveals not just butterflies and broken hearts. In Scripture, we see God’s beautiful design for the partnership of marriage. We witness friendships that cross all boundaries.

The short book of Philippians is one of the most quoted in the Bible, yet Paul wrote it not for the popular sound bites, but to paint a picture of a mature Christian faith. While many give their lives to Jesus, few then go on to live a life of truly vibrant faith. In this disruptively inspiring book, Chandler offers tangible ways to develop a faith of pursuing, chasing, knowing, and loving Jesus. Because if we clean up our lives but don't get Jesus, we've lost! So let the goal be him.

What happens when we literally walk out our Christian life? We discover the joy of traveling at the speed of our soul. We often act as if faith is only about the mind. But what about our bodies? What does our physical being have to do with our spiritual life? When the Bible exhorts us to walk in the light, or walk by faith, or walk in truth, it means these things literally as much as figuratively. The Christian faith always involves walking out, as again and again we find the holy in the ordinary.

What is in a person’s heart, that’s what comes out in their words.
Again, I am so thankful that this series was written. I have learnt so much, not only about spiritual disciplines that we need to live and grow in, but to witness this growth in our heroes of faith.
And it is indeed true. When we soak in the Word, we see His beauty and that beauty is expressed in our own daily words.
Thank to both author and narrator for this wonder series!

Edifying look into legendary Christian artists
A very edifying look into three legendary Christian artists' work for God. One, a humble poet, another a talented actor and third a man of stories and the fantastical.
It was very interesting to see each man's way of "seeing beautiful and seeing beautifully". They were so different, but still so alike.
As a Christian with a proclivity for aesthetic endeavours this was a very encouraging listen. Beauty is really a God glorifying goal in itself!

Interesting, sometimes fascinating
Seeing Beauty, Saying Beautifully is a call to meditate on God, on truth, on nature, on the mundane - to discover its meaning in such depth that we can convey that beauty and mystery and depth to another. Piper does this by examining the lives and work of three very different men whom God used in unexpectedly powerful ways because they had this personal habit of digging deep, pondering mysteries, seeking the beautiful and sublime and profound, then expressing it from the heart in ways that conveyed that beauty, that profound grasp to his hearer.
The examinations themselves were interesting in their diversity but dragged a bit, and I had to make myself get through to the next oasis, but the section on CS Lewis - though I was (or perhaps because I was) very familiar with his works and bio - delightful.
in the end, I'm glad I read it, and do recommend it for any seeker, any writer, and believer with any literary bent... or to anyone who just would like to have more impact when speaking of their faith. Basically, to all who hope to be ready to give the reason for tge hope that is in them.

Wonderful book let down by the narration
Piper's introduction is an important contribution to discussions about the craft of preaching. He gives a thoroughly biblical framework from which to consider what he calls "poetic effort" which can be (should be?) applied in preaching and writing. It will encourage writers and preachers to see that their efforts to "say beautifully" for God's sake, are not simply showy froth for man's sake. He then follows with biographical snapshots of Herbert, Whitfield and Lewis, showing aspects of this poetic effort in their writings and how it contributed to the over all potency of their works. Highly recommended content.
I know it's subjective, but the narration was very disappointing. It's one of the most robotic performances I've heard of any audiobook. The irony that this book emphasises the power and importance of "saying beautifully" is not lost to the listener. Persevere for the sake of the content, but it would be fantastic to have a more dynamic, metered, impassioned re-recording.

Inappropriate title
I admire John Piper but listening to this seemed quite bizarre as it did not appear to be anything to do with the title. At the end he does try and explain the reason for the title but by then I had long ago lost the plot. I also have read these authors and greatly admire their works and so much of their essence seemed to be left out..

Jesus' words in John 12 are sobering: unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it will bear little fruit. The history of Christianity's expansion proves that God's strategy for reaching unreached peoples with the gospel includes the sufferings of his frontline heralds - the missionaries who willingly die a thousand daily deaths to advance God's kingdom. For William Tyndale, Adoniram Judson, and John Paton, the price they paid to translate the Word of God, to pave the way for missionary mobilization around the world, and to lead the hostile to Christ was great.

Story
John Newton, Charles Simeon, and William Wilberforce suffered lifelong opposition and endured for the causes of gospel truth, missionary zeal, and political justice. They found, in solid doctrine and humble joy, the tough roots for habitual tenderness in response to their adversaries - without doctrinal or moral flinching. They are examples of remarkable grace. In the third book of the Swans Are Not Silent series, best-selling author John Piper looks at the lives of these three great men and how they not only endured great opposition but did so with joy and without bitterness.

Story
Jesus' words in John 12 are sobering: unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it will bear little fruit. The history of Christianity's expansion proves that God's strategy for reaching unreached peoples with the gospel includes the sufferings of his frontline heralds - the missionaries who willingly die a thousand daily deaths to advance God's kingdom. For William Tyndale, Adoniram Judson, and John Paton, the price they paid to translate the Word of God, to pave the way for missionary mobilization around the world, and to lead the hostile to Christ was great.

Story
We admire these men for their greatness, but the truth is Augustine grappled with sexual passions, Martin Luther struggled to control his tongue, and John Calvin fought the battle of faith with worldly weapons. Yet each of these men will always be remembered for the messages they declared - messages that still resound today. John Piper explores these men's lives, integrating Augustine's delight in God with Luther's emphasis on the Word and Calvin's exposition of scripture. Through their strengths and struggles, we can learn how to live better today.
