Publisher's Summary

Four young ladies at the side of the ballroom make a pact to help each other find husbands...no matter what it takes

Proud and beautiful Annabelle Peyton could have her pick of suitors--if only she had a dowry. Her family is on the brink of disaster, and the only way Annabelle can save them is to marry a wealthy man. Unfortunately her most persistent admirer is the brash Simon Hunt, a handsome and ambitious entrepreneur who wants her as his mistress.

Annabelle is determined to resist Simon's wicked propositions, but she can't deny her attraction to the boldly seductive rogue, any more than he can resist the challenge she presents. As they try to outmaneuver each other, they find themselves surrendering to a love more powerful than they could have ever imagined. But fate may have other plans--and it will take all of Annabelle's courage to face a peril that could destroy everything she holds dear.

Great Book!

What does Rosalyn Landor bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She is the best reader ever! RL + LK = automatic download.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Mr. Hunt considered compromising Anabel again in the same night just for "Insurance" purposes. It was funny and romantic at the same time.

Any additional comments?

The Wallflowers series is awesome! And once you've finished you have to read The Hathaways . A must read/listen.

ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!!!

What made the experience of listening to Secrets of a Summer Night the most enjoyable?

This novel is pieced together so wonderfully, so magnificently that my only mistake in approaching it was listening to this audiobook before bedtime. Lisa Kleypas beautifully intertwines the characters of Annabelle and Simon Hunt and their developing romance in this novel that you just can't stop listening to. There are so many perspectives that captivate the reader.

1) Society's impact on the characters: Annabelle is beautiful and if she had a dowry she would be highly sought after by eligible bachelors in the upper class. Yet, something interesting is revealed about how the aristocracy functions. Because of Annabelle's dire financial circumstances, the men in her class act like vultures, as they follower her progress in her attempt to find a husband. Both single and married men in her class believe that she is highly unlikely to marry well. In their view, she is destined to be a scintillating and coveted mistress.

2) Simon as the hero: Although he is handsome, tall, rich, intelligent and hugely successful, because his lineage is from commoners, he is not completely accepted among the aristocracy. Simon represents a new breed of rising social juggernauts....he is an entrepreneur. I had mixed feelings about Simon. He came across as just another vulture who was also going to benefit from Annabelle's financial and less-than-fortunate social situation. First of all, Simon is quite alluring and the chemistry between Annabelle and himself is electrifying. You get the impression immediately that although he is physically desirous of her, that his feelings for her run deeper; that he truly loves her. Yet, I could not understand why he also was seeking her as a mistress. If I thought Simon's character was alluring at the beginning, throughout the book I was just so curious and interested in seeing what kind of man he really was. And, OH MY GOODNESS.....He is just a dream come true, and I'm so glad it worked out.

3) Women in society: Annabelle and her mother's relationship was so touching to me. I wanted to cry for her mother when she became a mistress of an old, fat, ruddy man who used to actually be a friend of her husband before he died. Annabelle's mother gives herself to his man because of the financial benefits to her family. She tries to hold on, until Annabelle can make a reasonable marriage and save their family's financial situation. I also loved the relationship Annabelle establishes with the wallflowers; her friends.

Oh, I could go on and on because this book touched me and captivated me. The author did a superb job in thinking about the reader. This book delivers in each level of the characters relationship phase: when they are acquaintances, falling in love, marriage life and the grand ending. The best way I can describe this book is absolute perfection!!!

What about Rosalyn Landor’s performance did you like?

Rosalyn Landor is wonderful!!! She is so talented and enhances the listening experience. I can't believe how well she is able to portray the variation of voices for both men and women. What a treat to listen to her!!!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes...and listen to it over and over...

Any additional comments?

I read reviews for the next book in the series and some are saying that it is better than the first book; which I find hard to believe. Yet, I'm excited to decide for myself. This author may just become one of my favorite if she delivers on the following books in this series.

A Male Perspective

What made the experience of listening to Secrets of a Summer Night the most enjoyable?

The way in which is was performed was excellent. The story was perhaps a bit drawn out.

If you’ve listened to books by Lisa Kleypas before, how does this one compare?

First time with this author

What about Rosalyn Landor’s performance did you like?

The way in which her voice portrayed the various characters was extremely well done

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I like the way that the story built to a climax. The scene in the music room where Annabelle and Simon have to quietly wait while the musicians practice. The sexual tension and the anticipation is amazing

Any additional comments?

As a male, I don't usually read or listen to this kind of story. I must say it was very well written and the whole thing was very tastefully written.

Blathering blathering

Would you try another book from Lisa Kleypas and/or Rosalyn Landor?

Yes

What was most disappointing about Lisa Kleypas’s story?

It was endless with drama about heroine's mother, their wretched state and our hero not good enough due to his lack of nobility. Wanted to scream and throw the book-- but oops I was listening to it.
This was not one of my favorites of LK. Dither, dither, dither.

Have you listened to any of Rosalyn Landor’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. She does well.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Sets the scene for the rest of the Wallflower stories.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVED IT!!

I had already marked this as a book in my wish list, but when it came up on sale, I went ahead and purchased it. The wit and humor between the Wallflowers made the book enjoyable just to follow the women's friendship. The chemistry between Annabelle & Simon and their love/hate relationship was just an added bonus. The narrator is wonderful, but I've always enjoyed her and I think she does a wonderful job. This story was so fun and romantic and was not just about the love between a man and a woman, but the friendship that was developed between four women. As soon as I finished listening, I looked to see if the story continued and was pleased to see that the story of the remaining Wallflowers are available, and I immediately downloaded the second book. What a delightful series! I'm glad I stumbled upon this book or I would have missed out on a wonderful collection of laughter and love wrapped up in one book!
