Arthur Westmoreland slipped silently into the evening shadows of the balcony overlooking the foyer below. He allowed himself a brief smile as he watched the new governess read to his children before succumbing once again to gruff mannerisms and thoughts of gloom.
Why had he brought more innocent victims into this house? Didn’t he realize that he couldn’t outrun or outlive the demons that apparently cursed it? For a few brief years he had thought differently, when he had met and married the love of his life. But when he lost her six months earlier, he realized there was no hope. The best he could do now was protect his two children from…what? An unseen force that seemed to bring early death or tragedy at least once in every generation?

And what about this innocent girl, who by all accounts seemed to be the ray of sunshine this house and family needed? She was absolutely lovely. Had he brought the curse to her as well?
