Publisher's summary

Sometimes fairy tales do come true…

As a single mother of two, Faye O'Neill has no time for fairy tales. She's not even certain she believes in luck. Practical, smart, and desperate to escape a shadowy past, Faye takes a job at a top advertising firm in London where she hopes she and her children can find a fresh start. When she finds the beautiful two-story flat for rent in a stately old Victorian complete with a neglected but tumbling English garden, she can scarcely believe her good fortune. But it isn't long before Faye realizes not everything in the old home may be as peaceful as it seems.

A strange light begins to appear in her children's rooms at night, and then there's the reclusive elderly tenant, Crazy Wendy, her landlady warned her to steer clear of, the woman who spends her evenings spying on Faye's children from her garret-room window. The woman who believes she is Peter Pan's Wendy. To make matters worse, Faye, who has sworn off men, discovers her downstairs neighbor Jack is a disturbingly handsome professor with a talent for charming women and children alike. Before she knows it, Faye has embarked upon a whole new adventure into a world where anything might be possible, where broken hearts can be healed by a kiss, and where Neverland may not be a place of fables but a forgotten land one can still find if they are only brave enough to follow the second star to the right.

Magical

Once again I couldn't put down a Mary Alice Monroe book! I shared it with my fairy-loving 12 year old daughter & she found it just as magical as I did.

Kindergarten for Adults

What would have made Second Star to the Right better?

I have to admit - I think I only made it through the first two chapters. First of all - I am just not able to suspend enough belief to consider that Peter Pan may be real. When the story started with the grown man chasing "tinker bell" I knew I was in trouble, let alone listening to him explain to a grown woman that Peter Pan may be real. Second - the characters are very cliche and predictable. Third - Mary Alice Monroe should NEVER narrate. I felt like I was listening to a fairy tale read by an older pre-school teacher.

I wanted to try to be open to the experience but just wasn't!

Would you ever listen to anything by Mary Alice Monroe again?

Yes, as long as she doesn't narrate.

Would you be willing to try another one of Mary Alice Monroe’s performances?

No.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Second Star to the Right?

From what I read , most of it.

Any additional comments?

Thank goodness for returns!

I've listened to 11 chapters and can't go on

What would have made Second Star to the Right better?
I love adult fantasy and would gladly suspend my disbelief for a story that gives Peter Pan some new life. But I'm 11 chapters in and have seen very little magic or fantasy. So far this has been a formulaic romance novel with largely two-dimensional characters. This kind of story certainly has its place and its audience, but the genre should be made clear in the summary to set accurate expectations.

What could Mary Alice Monroe have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I'm just the wrong audience for this book. I enjoy an adult fantasy story that includes robust characters involved in believable romantic situations. But fantasy doesn't mean unbelievable characters. Whatever their story, the people I'm reading about have to be real, or I simply won't care about them.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Mary Alice Monroe?
The narrator should be someone who actually lives in the UK. Her attempts at a British accent are embarrassing.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Second Star to the Right?
Most of what this book offers about the business world, single parenting, and romance bears no resemblance to real life. Examples: No ad agency would assign one person to work alone, for weeks on end, just to produce a basic concept for one ad campaign. No boss in his right mind would sexually assault a female employee just to see if she's still got the spunk he admired in her years ago. Nobody calls a female co-worker a "girl," even if she's very young. A working mom who is too busy to sit down for tea is certainly not going to try to make dinners from scratch every night. These scenarios stop me cold, and the book is full of them.

Any additional comments?
Obviously Monroe is a very successful author, and I may try reading another of her books someday. But this book does not succeed.

A great story for family listening.

Combining a loved faerie tale with a modern twist. it was a sweet book. I truely enjoyed the idea of the book. It was uncomplicated and easy to understand, perfect for family listening during a long car ride.
