Publisher's Summary

New York Times best-selling author Deepak Chopra joins forces with leading physicist Menas Kafatos to explore some of the most important and baffling questions about our place in the world.

What happens when modern science reaches a crucial turning point that challenges everything we know about reality? In this brilliant, timely, and practical work, Chopra and Kafatos tell us that we've reached just such a point. In the coming era, the universe will be completely redefined as a "human universe" radically unlike the cold, empty void where human life is barely a speck in the cosmos.

You Are the Universe literally means what it says: Each of us is a cocreator of reality extending to the vastest reaches of time and space. This seemingly impossible proposition follows from the current state of science, where outside the public eye, some key mysteries cannot be solved, even though they are the very issues that define reality itself:

  • What came before the big bang?
  • Why does the universe fit together so perfectly?
  • Where did time come from?
  • What is the universe made of?
  • Is the quantum world linked to everyday life?
  • Do we live in a conscious universe?
  • How did life first begin?

"The shift into a new paradigm is happening," the authors write. "The answers offered in this book are not our invention or eccentric flights of fancy. All of us live in a participatory universe. Once you decide that you want to participate fully with mind, body, and soul, the paradigm shift becomes personal. The reality you inhabit will be yours either to embrace or to change." What these two great minds offer is a bold new understanding of who we are and how we can transform the world for the better while reaching our greatest potential.

What the Critics Say

"Almost 100 years ago the sage Tagore and the scientist Einstein had a brief encounter to discuss the nature of reality. Revisiting their fascinating discourse on how science and spirituality inform each other is long overdue and this new book finally does it! Even if you - like me, prefer Einstein's world, this book will make you marvel at Tagore's beautiful human universe as masterfully uncovered by the authors." (Dimitar Sasselov, professor of astronomy, Harvard University; author of The Life of Super-Earths: How the Hunt for Alien Worlds and Artificial Cells will Revolutionize Life on Our Planet)

"This is not just another popular science book asking who am I? and why am I here?. This important new book addresses today's most important scientific questions regarding our very existence. In the end, we can't help but to be convinced that we live in a participatory universe that we define and synthesize according to the nervous system we enjoy as a species. The result is a riveting and absolutely fascinating literary adventure that will blow your mind wide open!" (Dr. Rudolph E. Tanzi, Joseph. P. and Rose F. Kennedy Professor of Neurology; Harvard Medical School vice chair, neurology; director, Genetics and Aging Research Unit, Massachusetts General Hospital)

"An inspiring and insightful work that points out the sterility and inadequacy of the materialist paradigm that unnecessarily pervades modern science." (Ruth E. Kastner, PhD, author of Understanding Our Unseen Reality: Solving Quantum Riddles)

"Add this one to your list of must listens. "

The book walks the line between spirituality and science to bring awareness of ones self as a participant, creator, observer in the perception of the universe that is found in self. With a good grasp of the science used to describe the physical universe the book attempts to encourage and bring to light the surging trend of consciousness of mind and universe. Through this understanding a new enlightenment of self and reality is hoped to spawn. For those who already have been considering these ideas this book may provide validation of your thoughts as well as help to connect some dots that you may be missing. Definitely one to add to your library.

    "Food for deep thought"

While I have a very good education in science, physics, chemistry, mathematics and engineering, this brings a whole new dimension to all of those. I'm now going to read/listen again. it will take a while to absorb.

    "Pretty heavy thinking. interesting stuff."

This is not your typical novel. It is by one of our greatest mind's today so don't expect a joy ride. This is for deep thinking and requires your undivided attention, but we'll worth the time.

"True tale of the physical and metaphysical cosmos"
What did you love best about You Are the Universe?

Understandable yet profound. Thought provoking and thought expanding.

What other book might you compare You Are the Universe to and why?

The Field and The Source Field

What does Kaleo Griffith bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Shines a light on the philosophical, religious, physical and metaphysical implications of the reality of the quantum universe.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

It would need to be a documentary film.

    Any additional comments?

I have been looking for a book like this for a while now and here it is. It does a great job of shrinking the universe down to the personal while explaining all the scientific realities of the quantum world and the subsequent metaphysics.

    "Perception Altering"

not for the beginner! in depth summation, physics, quantum physics and our existence within it.

I will listen again just to make sure I missed nothing.

there was a moment of pure understanding of which I felt a part of.....everything. as if my body and mind expanded to fill the universe...or best stated to be of the universe. just a moment, as soon as I realized what was happening....it moved on beyond my ability to grasp. made me laugh as I read further and it was stated, that understanding fully..or experiencing fully was impossible, because awareness collapses all into the Now...which does not really exist!

    amazing and wonderful.

"Great discussion. .. lousy conclusion "

I really enjoyed the discussion of how the laws of physics relate to each other and our perception of the universe. But the authors do not present a compelling case for the universal consciousness.

    "You Are the Universe"
Would you consider the audio edition of You Are the Universe to be better than the print version?

Yes, I think listening to the audio version of this book is much better. The book is so heady that listening to it keeps one better focused.

If you could give You Are the Universe a new subtitle, what would it be?

"Food for thought, no actually a buffet for thought." Tons of things to think about. This is a book that you'll understand 30% at first and must listen again to understand 60%, possibly even a 3rd listen is needed.

    Any additional comments?

Interesting, mind blowing ideas, but it's a book that presents ideas and reader is constantly thinking OK where are you going with this? Don't know if a traditional scientist would be very thrilled to read this book.

    "Can't get through the narrator"

The narrator is so dry it is hard to get through the book. His voice doesn't contain any of the beauty or mystery of the book; he sounds clinical, very formal. He could be narrating a washing machine commercial.

"Questions you had been asking yourself answered"

The narrator was very clear to understand.
The Story all comes together at the end and throughout the book, by using examples from different chapters into other chapters. I liked how the science backs up the faith questions I and some of my friends have had in the past. Overall, i really enjoyed the book, but it's a lot of information that has to be processed. Therefore I will have to listen to it again for pockets of info that I didn't understand at the time of listening because I was still thinking about the previous chapter. The book def made me think a lot.
