An excellent cast of actors adds intensity and real stakes to this story about biologist Schuyler Baines, who arrives bristling with ideas at a research station in the Galapagos islands, only to find herself in over her head. Schuyler shuts down a black market that threatens the local ecosystem and is unprepared for the backlash. Cynthia Watros has Schuyler's personality down - her voice rings with good intentions gone awry - and makes Schuyler maddening and eventually, sympathetic. Based on actual events, this drama explores the themes of evolution and extinction, framed by Darwin's theory of the survival of the fittest.

In an emotional ecosystem as complex as that of our planet, is life nothing more than survival of the fittest? Michael Hollinger based his probing work on the real-life giant tortoise named “Lonesome George”, and the efforts to preserve his species that threatened the livelihood of the native fishermen on the Galàpagos Islands.
This play is part of L.A. Theatre Works’ Relativity Series featuring science-themed plays. Major funding for the Relativity Series is provided by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, to enhance public understanding of science and technology in the modern world.
