Story
Thirty-five years ago, Dr. Richard Burt began a journey to treat chronic autoimmune diseases as they’d never been treated before. Using a treatment originally developed for leukemia but modified to be more gentle—a one-time combination of immune targeting drugs followed by a transplant of the patient’s blood stem cells—he has documented the successful and often dramatic reversal of multiple sclerosis, systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIPD), neuromyelitis optica, and Crohn’s disease.

Over 90 percent of the population suffers from inflammation or an autoimmune disorder. Until now, conventional medicine has said there is no cure. But it doesn't have to be this way.

In Mitochondria and the Future of Medicine, naturopathic doctor Lee Know tells the epic story of mitochondria - the widely misunderstood and often-overlooked powerhouses of our cells. The legendary saga began over two billion years ago, when one bacterium entered another without being digested, which would evolve to create the first mitochondrion. Since then, for life to exist beyond single-celled bacteria, it's the mitochondria that have been responsible for this life-giving energy.

Story
Complaints of brain fog, fatigue, and ADD/ADHD are on the rise and growing every year. All of these factors can block the brain's ability to detoxify and heal. If toxins are not eliminated, they recirculate in the brain, leading to inflammation, which further compromises your brain. Here's the good news: Plant-based essential oils are a powerful self-care tool for transforming your life and healing on many levels, even when prescription drugs have failed. In Jodi Cohen’s five-step protocol, the body's natural systems are jump-started with essential-oil recipe blends.

Publisher's summary
Like many physicians, Dr. Terry Wahls focused on treating her patients' ailments with drugs or surgical procedures - until she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2000. Within three years, her back and stomach muscles had weakened to the point where she needed a tilt-recline wheelchair. Conventional medical treatments were failing her, and she feared that she would be bedridden for the rest of her life.
Dr. Wahls began studying the latest research on autoimmune disease and brain biology, and decided to get her vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids from the food she ate rather than pills and supplements. Dr. Wahl's adopted the nutrient-rich paleo diet, gradually refining and integrating it into a regimen of neuromuscular stimulation. First, she walked slowly, then steadily, and then she biked 18 miles in a single day. In November 2011, Dr. Wahls shared her remarkable recovery in a TEDx talk that immediately went viral. Now, in The Wahls Protocol, she shares the details of the protocol that allowed her to reverse many of her symptoms, get back to her life, and embark on a new mission: to share the Wahls Protocol with others suffering from the ravages of multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune conditions.

This book is extremely informative and inspiring
In the last 4 year I have been diagnosed with, ADD, extreme fatigue syndrome, sever B12 deficiency, vitamin D insufficiency, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia. I was finding myself on a steady decline for the worst with the nasty side effects of the 8+, very potent, medications I was being prescribed. I was also unable to afford my drugs and the $5,000 insurance deductible that I have met for the 4th year in a row. The stress of all this alone had me at the end of my rope and I was ever so close to giving up all together. I am 29 years old and was feeling closer to 80.
A little over a month ago a woman stopped by my shop and suggested that I check out the Wahls protocol. I was skeptical at first, but I was desperate for a change. Within the first two weeks my mental fog disappeared. And in a month my energy levels are 50% better than they were before. I'm not 100% better yet, but it brings me to tears knowing that I am actually getting better instead of the slow decline that was on. For the first time in six years, I have hope- this alone is drastically life changing.
Dr. Wahls is my hero. She gave me my life back.

Functional Medicine diet applicable 2 mny diseases
Functional Medicine is at a high level an engineering type of systems analysis of the human body. Terry Wahls while under assault from MS, took a functional medicine approach to helping her body fight back against MS. This is notable for many reasons not the least of which are her examples of tenacity, mental strength, and perseverance in extreme adversity. But it is also notable because she trusted her body that was failing her to fix her. Many practitioners, theoreticians, and laypeople are coming to a conclusion that many of today's most troubling diseases are caused by metabolic / mitochondrial dysfunction. Solving metabolic dysfunction was at the root of Dr. Wahl's approach and she initially designed a supplement program to help her mitochondrial become more powerful. As she began to feel better she designed a diet to replace much of her supplement regimen.
So what you are getting in this book is a diet that is aimed at restoration of your mitochondrial power. Many practitioners think this is a strategy that can be successful for diseases such as diabetes, MS, palsy, CFS, etc. Whether you are sick or healthy, you could likely benefit from comparing and contrasting this diet with your own. There is a ton of wisdom built into this diet. Our bodies are all different so dietary "hacking"/"tweaking" is almost always necessary, but this diet would make a great starting place for someone looking to change their current health trajectory.

Excellent but no food lists or recipes
What made the experience of listening to The Wahls Protocol the most enjoyable?
Dr Wahls' own stories and those of her patients are totally inspirational, and the information on the three levels of diet and lifestyle are quite detailed. This audiobook does not include her food lists, recipes, or nutrient tables that the hardbound offers (granted these make for tedious reading and listening).
What did you like best about this story?
Her great success and determination to press forward with research.
Have you listened to any of Pam Ward’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.

Diet & Autoimmunity - the systematic way
I am a nutritionally-oriented pharmacist. I encourage patients to take more responsibility for their health - with a bit of guidance. This works well and gives me great job-satisfaction but I'd always felt uncomfortable dealing with the most serious health conditions - afraid my encouragement to change diet would just raise false hopes and deny people the foods they feel comfortable with.
This book is a fantastic validation of the need for more courage. It documents a journey and is a compendium of what works and why
It is systematic - the author came to her current path by a process of elimination. She'd tried the best treatment options offered by her medical peers - and deteriorated - she'd then tried food supplements - and still deteriorated, albeit at a slower rate than when she stopped them.
And then she tried dramatic dietary change - a combination of paleo and ketogenic - along with nerve stimulation. This saw her leave her reclining wheelchair and progress to walking with - then without - a stick, and then onto a bike and ultimately the TED stage. Terri doesn't describe herself as cured, but has worked out how not to feed her MS and to maximise her cellular energy.
In my work, I struggle with the space between the solid, credible but often smug and blinkered world of orthodox medical science and the passionate, motivated, ever-experimenting but sometimes equally opinionated world of nutritional therapy.
It wounds me when a GP insults my work as 'lacking in evidence' while not even deigning to look at the double-blind studies I offer in support. And it disappoints me when some therapists fail to differentiate what has solid support and what derives from internet blogs.
Wahls's book straddles these worlds effortlessly and gives great courage. She has done the vast amount of reading and research - much while in her wheelchair - and has interpreted and applied it all in an n=1 experiment on herself. She looks at orthodox and less orthodox options and gives her verdict based on research and her experience.
I have recommended the Wahls Protocol to sufferers of autoimmune conditions.
The Audible book doesn't come with the tables from the book and that is a shame. It really should. Or at least a discounted Kindle or paperback option as an alternative.
That said, it is well narrated and engaging in the Audible format.
Suggested audience: 1) those with autoimmune conditions, 2) those involved in their healthcare

I don't have MS, but great book!
I'm one of those weird people who just likes reading health books. The story of Dr. Wahls and her reversal of MS symptoms was an interesting one. I found many parts of the book to be relevant, even though I don't have MS. It helped me to think that perhaps I could do my part to prevent disease. I do agree that she goes way overboard with her last name, calling everything "Wahls this" and "Wahls that." That undoubtedly got annoying, which accounts for the reduction in a star on my review. Other than that, it's a solid book.

I really liked this book
Would you listen to The Wahls Protocol again? Why?
I have listened to it several times already. There is so much information, you really should listen more than once.
Any additional comments?
I am very impressed with anyone who takes their life in their own hands and does not just resign themselves to their fate. Dr. Wahls miraculous journey from wheelchair to riding bikes is inspiring. I do not have MS but, I do have thyroid disease and it never occurred to me that I could improve my condition. Always thought it was just something I had to live with. I have been doing paleo diet with good results however weight loss has been slow. I will be doing wahls paleo plus starting tomorrow and cannot wait to see how much better I will feel.

Great information, compelling personal story
Wahls and Adamson present a science-based dietary program based clinical trials and Wahls' extensive research. The Protocol is a logical extension of diets like the Paleo, Ornish, and Atkins. Wahls' personal story brings her science report to life, and Ward's expert and engaging narration gives what could, at times, be dry material, energy and momentum. We're trying the diet, as a treatment for my wife's CFIDS/ME (a.k.a. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome).

Outstanding!
Practical and inspiring with just the right balance of science. Dr Wahls brings enormous and desperately needed credibility to the powerful potential of lifestyle interventions in the treatment of chronic disease. One of the best books I have listened to.
